Okay, I just had to post. I am a regular luker here, unknown to all of you, stopping by occasionally to delight in the pictures and have over the years become familiar with the posters, regular or otherwise. My observations, as an outsider: I am astounded that all of you who rushed so valiantly to Mary's defense were not in the least bothered by the uncalled for mean-spiritedness in her loaded comment "But I'm curious, do you interact with your family the same way you interact with the Idylls?' Can you guys not see that this was what hurt Marian the most, was the "unkindest cut of all" especially coming from oh-so-sweet and kind and caring Mary? That it made her feel like an outcast? That SHE is the aggrieved one here? I agree that Marian overreacted with the knife picture, but it also indicates how much Mary's comment hurt her. To talk about reporting here because of that, and the torrent of abuse that has been heaped on her just shows everybody's true colors. T, I disagree with the summary you posted about Marian. She has been outspoken and blunt but never, ever intentionally mean. As an outsider to the little clique here, to me she seemed one of the few who was genuine, the rest seemed to be intent on just showing their "kind, caring, empathetic" side until this episode proved just how vicious you all can be. Lest you all think I'm Marian's crony, rest assured, I have never had any contact with her or anyone else on this group, am an atheist, and about as far from her world-view as one can be. However, I have always admired her resilience at her age, her remarkable intelligence and conviction in her beliefs, and of course share her love for plants and gardening. And I come from a culture where age deserves some respect. Please do not send me emails on this issue. I have no desire to debate this further. I always viewed this group as something of an anomaly on the Web, but unfortunately it was too good to be true. Thanks! I was thinking that strutting rooster might not know how to swim! That would be funny though if he swam to the wrong side of the stream with all the ladies on the other side. Maybe he would risk a short 'flight' and nose dive again. I'm going to hold off until FTM picks a winner so we don't get too many games going. I already confused things with two photos at once:-) I'll hunt for a photo in the meanwhile, but I'm going to take a breather and let whomever FTM picks post the next photo.

min3: I have a little pre-formed pond, it is perhaps 180-200 gallons. I'm not exactly sure which pump/filter I have, it is something like this: http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=pondmaster+pond+filters&aq=3&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=pondmaster Initially there was a problem with it but my dealer replaced the impeller then gave me a whole replacement pump, and I remember him saying something to the effect that it is now a stronger pump then I started with. I modified it somewhat by adding a plate on the bottom so the pump stays attached to the filter. Otherwise the pump tends to fall over and looks ugly. I also striped the screws that hold the filter together so I added some longer screws and big washers to hold it together. Inside I stuck some rocks and some bio balls from another filter I had, this helps it hold the bottom when I change the filter. For the filter I keep year round a thick carbon filter from PM, change it once a year otherwise do not touch it. On top of that I have two pre-filters to grab the pond muck. These filters I made out of craft store 1 inch pads. I've used batting in the past but these get me thru the whole season without falling apart. When the fountain slows (once or twice a week) I pull the whole pump/filter out, replace the pre-filter with the other, put it back together and drop it back into the pond. Then I hose off the dirty filter and let it sit out till next change. This way I never put chlorine into the filter. That's a quick job, 10 minutes tops. This filter does a great job of keeping the muck out of my pond. Additionally, I grow a 50% cover of water lettuce. Mid summer the WL keeps the floating algae away, though I do sometimes run a UV filter when I'm in a hurry for crystal clear water.

Our gathering this year initiated by me. With 6 children among 3 moms living in the southern portion of California it made sense to meet in Hollywood for Thanksgiving. I recommended much of the menu according to the tastes and traditions of my friends. We had turkey wrapped in bacon, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, two kinds of sweet potatoes, green beans almondine, a lovely salad brought by guests, corn bread with bacon stuffing, apricot sausage bread stuffing, a raspberry-cream cheese jello, three kinds of cranberry sauces, homemade pumpkin pies and cheese cake, purchased cherry and pecan pies, ice creams, and whipped cream. It was all quite traditional fare. I made stuffings and gravy at home and traveled with those. Pie filling and crust pastry dough were made at home and assembled there. My crust discs didn't have enough moisture and fought me. Thankfully pumpkin pies only have bottom crusts that were well covered by filling. They were not pretty! But the taste and texture were good. I cooked the turkey and a spare breast there. The turkey went into a roaster. I cooked it 450 for an hour and then turned it down to 325 for the rest of the cooking and held it at warm while everything else finished. It was quite fine. It was an organic 19 pound tom. My friends made the sweet potatoes, cheesecake, jello dish, and cranberries. We also had canned cranberry jell. The young'uns love that stuff. Alice and Haley made guacamole to snack on before the meal. Our hostess Lisa made hot cider and coffee. Though I asked and my emails were forwarded to all guests, no one told me that the two daughters of my friend's friends are vegetarian. :( They ate around the heavily meaty offerings. I would happily have made something for them and some veggie stuffing had I known. I had many sous chefs among the young adults who wandered in and out and helped. Everyone pitched in with everything that needed to be done. Though I am perfectly capable of turkey carving, I was also really ready to abdicate the duty due to tiredness by the time the bird emerged. I asked my son to carve. He stuttered in a panic and left the kitchen. :) I asked the super social husband of the friend's friend to carve. He also blanched at the request but manned up on the spot and did the job. Bless his heart. All of the young folks took over at dessert time and set everything out after we cleaned up the main event. We were supposed to be 15 but the elderly momma was unable to attend so we were 14. I packed up a boxed meal for her. Things I would do differently next time: have a Silpat on which to roll pie crusts, make a vegetarian side that can work as entree for the vegetarians. Make sure we don't buy 2 hams and twenty pounds of potatoes. Lisa and I accidentally doubled up on a few things. I sent my starving student children home with two bags of potatoes. Otherwise, I would not change much. If we do this next year I will suggest that the adult children make some of the sides as well. Thankfully other people took photos!
