School is already starting......

Can you believe it?! LF is entering middle school this year. I know, I know, they grow up so fast. It's an academically geared school. During summer, they require he read two books and complete two projects, one by mid-Sept and one by mid-October. I'm trying to teach him not to procrastinate, to work on the projects so as to have them completed by school's beginning and then tweak them after discussing them in class. Anyway, the school just called and asked me to bring him in for his "math placement" test.

"Hello. Is this Mrs. North? This is ___ from ____."

"Yes, this is she."

"How are you doing?"

"Ironically, my son is in the other room writing book reports. (((laugh)))"

"That's great! We love to hear that (also laughs)."

It really struck me that she probably does hear that often. Well duh! It's a new world to me, as this school caters to kids like him. He'll be a much much smaller fish this time around, hope it's not too big a shock for him. It's such a different world than the one in which I grew up. Seems like they expect so much more out of them at younger and younger ages.

Hi Rob, I see that you mentioned that LF has to go in for math assement. My suggestion is to go with him and ask a whole lot of questions of the school, before he is tested.
Back when our children were in High School, the school came up with the "new math" and all hell broke lose. The children could not understand the new math, none of us parents could figure out what the math was about and we could not help our children with homework. We, the parents, rebelled and the new math was repealed.

Our club has a greenhouse with natural light where we will plant tomatoes in sixpack cells the 7th of March. The cells are on heat mats at 70 degrees. Three weeks later on March 28 they will be transplanted into 5 inch pots, still in the greenhouse, but off the heat mats. Three and a half weeks later they will be sold. Starting school greenhouse... help needed

Ernie, I'm a newbie to greenhouse gardening, and not all that experienced with veggies yet, so will leave it to the experts ... though, offhand, I would think cool weather crops like lettuces and peas would do well. Also, I would try to find plants that meet the following criteria: 1. not too fussy about growing conditions 2. disease & pest resistant (you'll probably want to keep pesticide applications to a minimum) 3. are generally familiar to and/or liked by the students (are you really going to get "into" growing brussels sprouts if you hate em?) 4. fun to grow - colors, aromas, textures ... uses (like gourds, for example ... which could lead to another whole project) If there is a strong desire by one or more students to try something particularly challenging, I'd say OK, in a separate area, as long as it doesn't compromise the curriculum or safety of the greenhouse occupants (both plant and human). That emotional connection is such a powerful tool. I've said a lot more than I intended, but I'm so thrilled to hear about your project and enthused for you and your students ... 11 years on a board of education will do that. Please be sure to document your project and its impact in writing and in pictures. It's a wonderful keepsake, another way to involve the students ... and you just may decide to apply for a grant or submit your project for recognition on a local or county level, or higher. Many County and State School Boards Associations have annual competitions, and I know the National School Boards Association does. There may be an opportunity to exhibit at the State level or higher - a real boost for the students, school and the community as a whole. First of all, to learn about how many other school gardens have gotten started, go to kidsgardening.com, which is a part of the National Gardening Association. They have a school garden registry with information on thousands of school gardens in US & Canada. Regarding vandalism: this is a problem that most community gardens deal with at some time. It may be just a minor problem, or major... I have seen quite a few community gardens across the country and some are fenced with the individual gardeners having keys...other gardens insist on being open to the public at all times. It all depends your particular group, and area. For more information on community gardens, go to the American Community Gardening Association website: www.communitygarden.org They have a very valuable listserve (email list) that you can join if you are so inclined. School gardens are diverse--from one teacher having a small plot for their classroom, to whole school projects that are grant funded. Also have seen homeschool gardens. Are you supposed to support why school should not start an hour later? Call your school bus transportation department and ask what the later hour would do to the school district's bus schedule. Talk to coaches and ask them what that would do to game schedules, practice time, and how much class would athletes miss on school game days when they must travel to a game site away. Talk to working parents or teens who babysit an elementary student and what this new schedule will do to their child care plans if they use high schoolers to babysit.

Thanks West, but not necessary. The reason for today's test is, our state does standardized testing, using the scores for non-neighborhood kids (ironically, we're only on the other side of the same road!) to gain acceptance to his school. Since it's also part of a neighborhood where anyone can attend the school, and the test scores haven't made it to the school yet, we had to do the tests so they could figure which classes to put the children in so as to have similar levels in each class. He whizzed through it. It's actually opposite of "no child left behind". This is a school for gifted children and the neighborhood is in an intercity area. That is, the intercity kids are put through the same rigors as the gifted children and as a result, they do well. They use the separate classes for two subjects, giving the slower learners as much help is needed. The rest of the time, they are together. I know it's hard to believe that Nashville is so progressive, but it is. Nashville was one of the first cities to go Metro and, consequently, we don't suffer disparate areas with kids who lack education and support systems. It's a great place to raise a family.

Mostly, I am surprised how much earlier he's having to do the sorts of things I didn't do until high school. 5th vs 11th grade?! It's amazing how things are changing. For the better? I guess, but I thought summer was for relaxing!

Rob, it looks like you have things in hand. Glad to see that LF did well.
As you explained, Nashville is progressive, so I guess they want to get started early to identify the student's abilities.

School is already starting......
