Not sure where you are, nut down here most vanda growers water them for about 10 mins 2 - 3 times per day and fertilize 3 times a week. They look great that way...

Vondavixen, I grow my vondas in a vases indoors. The trick is to not keep a lot of water in the vases 24/7. I have clear marbles at the bottom of the vase to make sure it's not top heavy. The vase is just big enough at the opening to sit the little basket down into the top of it a couple of inches. The roots hang down into the vase. (Except for those that shoot up instead.) I keep 1 inch of water in the vase 24/7 to supply a little extra humidity to the plant. Other than that I soak the vonda roots in water for maybe 10 to 20 min 2 or 3 times a week. Than dump most of the water out again. My vondas were fine with this method but after reading another post I decided to put some moss in the basket too. Not a whole lot. Just enough to barely cover the base of the roots. The moss dries out days before the next watering but the vondas really like it anyway. They had a little growth spurt and they are also putting out fat new root shoots in the basket. No loss of old roots. As much as vondas love humidity and moisture - a single 20 min soak once a week wouldn't be ideal in dryer environments. If you search this web site for vondas in vases you should run into other posts on how people are growing them indoors.

I did leave it in the basket it came in the small black one and maybe had too much water in the vase..it even grew alge
can't spell but not all died but taking it away makes me worry it will go back to being stressed...Maybe I will do what you say I'm watching now as our temps feel over 100 equally with humidity...

100F and 100% humidity is just not possible. Well it is but very unlikely. In your discussions about Vandas you have to separate the Terete Leaved ones from those with normal leaves. The terete ones being more tolerant of higher light levels.
Interesting that you are in Florida and are having troubles. Should be a breeze to grow them there.
I would have thought what orchidguyftl said in the post above would be right on the money but i guess i'm missing something.

They are glasshouse plants here. Lovely day, temp about 70F but the humidity is 34%. Not good for them.

UR KIDDING RIGHT ? THis place is always at about 100% humidity when temps hit yesterday 97 f with rain coming my car alone feels like 200 ...Oh yes it is and no breeze on our summer days just sometimes . This is how the Terete which I had growing in the vase was so stressed out.
If I had a back yard a hose some trees I would hang them outside ...My proplem is I'm on the second floor in a condo screened in Porch Not such a breeze...My porch hits high 80's with the 100% to 90% humidity Alturm it is awful.
Each year it seems to get hotter and hotter now in May we got high summer temps..Tonight the temps are 80 f so I was thinking to move Vandas in at night in the air conditioning ?

The dendrobium is doing well Phals all are inside they too get stressed out leaves...when in toomuch heat
Inside they are happier with fan circulation and air conditioning .
Was bringing in the Strap leaved in bloom and bursts a few on the tip..This was my 3rd spike in 2 months awesome the Vasco Pink...

VandaV, I grew up in central Arkansas, and Arthur, we often had 100F+ and humidity in the high 90s. Wretched. Even though everything had air conditioning, just getting into the hot car, waiting till it cooled down, and then going the distance from cool car to cool buildings could wear you out and ruin your hair-do.

When I moved to Minnesota in '81, there was a front-page newspaper headline - pet/livestock/people alert because temps were going to be in the mid-90s and humidity in the upper 80% range.

I thought Minnesotans were wusses, but at the time, that was extreme for the Twin Cities - not anymore, unfortunately. A couple of summers ago, many people around here lost orchids or had them get set back severely because temps were over 100F w/ high humidity for days on end.

Vanda, I don't have enough light to grow Vandas but hope you find a solution.

I live in SOCAL and used to grow Vandas in a greenhouse. 4 years ago I moved and decided to forgo the GH and grow under shade cloth in the backyard without additional protection. Several of my Vandas started going downhill and I gave them away. 3 survived, all bluish which is no surprise as the blue strain is tolerant to low winter temps.

They get watered daily, no additional humidity and bloom regularly with decent new growth. Kikkis are forming. Winter temps go just below freezing for a few days every year, Summer sees temps close to 100F often with minimal humidity. Under these conditions Vandas should NOT do well but blue ones can be tried.

Whitecat and everyone ..thanx goood notes , can you even imagine that kinda life 9 -10 months out of the year..?The worst thing is Intense heat no wind 100% humidity that no hot Iron can fix (your hair straight lol)
Sometimes or alot depending on impulse purchases of orchids...Going from the air conditioned store after purchase...(God knows what it went through to get there)...Spike with buds .. and then try and get it safely now into a HOT STEAMING CAR praying the buds don't blast before you arrive home..
Almost everytime I loose the buds.
Car air conditioning can take 10 mins before a cool down.
The other thing is Phals they hate it and the spagnum moss around the potting mix often can bring on all kinds of stuff as it can just stay too... too moist causing root rot /crown rot yes crown...as the moss around the stem . I almost use no potting mix but some coal/bark/husks a little spagnum as the moss often holds in too much moisture..we can over water easily thinking that the high temps will stress them out..or kill them .
That is why I'm starting to think of bringing them in maybe at night for an experimental observation of change in Temps at least 10 degrees less might keep them happier...as they make me lol...

I would think Southern california could be a nice place to grow cool growing Vascos etc..Phals? Interesting isn't it? This global warming and crazy winter has really been surprizing to us all...It was in the 40's here after a 85 degree day in February that was awful to the plants ..trust me.. but I liked it ;') I lost a lot of buds and plants hmmmmm

Vanda, up here in the Northland, we cool or warm our cars before putting the orchids in. :) Regular retail store staff can give you some puzzled looks when you ask them to hold the plant(s) for about 15 minutes while you cool off the car.

Also, if you take a big plastic bag w/ you to put over the plant and pot before going outside, summer or winter, it protects from the extreme temps somewhat.

This gets more funny looks from the retail folks.

I haven't lost any buds, using the plastic bags, but again, I don't grow "Vondas."

Funny and great too many people here online in these places to hold vandas but it's a thought hihi.. and leaving your car unattended here ahhh no too much theft .I'd also be afraid covering it locks in more moisture ...You should be glad u don't have Vandas lol what a job but what rewards...I love them all.. Thank you you are so sweet all of you ....

No matter where you are there will be Genera that are difficult for your conditions. After many posts i wondered why anyone would have trouble growing "vandas" in Florida and perhaps the answer might be the direction that screened in porch faces. East would be heaven. South West perhaps worse than North.

Then again, there are orchids that do not like temps much over 30C (about 90F) and perhaps the cool growing parent of Vasco. Pine Rivers is one of those. Cool growing in orchid talk usually means tolerant of lower night temperatures.

When it is summer here, it is important to get shading right otherwise nothing with survive the one or two extremely hot days with temps in the mid 40'sC. That means a couple of layers of shadecloth over Cattleyas. How much sun gets through the screen on that porch?

My porch faces south...Here in zone 10 a southern exposure is advised. Iam what is called south Florida about 3 hours from the keyes and 30 miniutes from Palm Beach and Fort lauderdale if that helps ? Right now no direct sunlight hits but the heat..is there morning sun and shade all afternoon small breeze today and in the 80's f.

I gave everybody a good shower they look happier and now daily misting except the den..we will see what happens.
Vasco in a lovely spike with gorgeous blooms..my cam is not working but cell phone pics I have and plan to post. Sadly, I can't get the great lengths in the fotos of the Vascos root system about 3 feet long hanging out ...The den is over 2 feet high.. Phals simering down from blooming for 3 months or so..They now are inside with a circulating fan.Leaves very very happy..When in bloom one noid unfortunately that is what happens here alot of noids sorry stayed with hardly any watering in bloom for 3 months ..awesome I so wish I had the name as I would buy more ..
Oncidiums and the tiny Tolumnia Vaset xRobsans I believe stoped blooming but looking good. They are on a husk and I dip them daily in luke warm water ..later on will mist as well early morning for all.
I have Just about a 10 varieties of the Orchids looking to add some paphs not seen so many this year and the rest are two great travelers palms ...many many african violets and my great experimental Ming araelas..Then another type of araelea , and a great blooming fragrant jasmen tree then the very difficult pasiaflora coreulea..Then I bonsai and now intrigued with growing moss and staghorns...
So my Porch is a forest but next investments are asocendas and I think another vascostylis the V Zengo Pink remember for original vase experiment did not do well out of vase these past few days so today back in... There is now a sticky something coming off some center leaves..like a new bud makes can't figure this out ...should I wash it off ? not sure anymore .. Looking for some nice ascocendas which are hard to find as they will bloom more often...it is a great expense and it is my first spring/summer in my mom's apartment since she died and I moved in ...Introducing new varieties in summer can be difficult we shall see.
I'm watching the Den..salaya fancy which is hugh in a large hanging basket in spagnum moss....Likes to stay some what drier and is threiving now in this heat ...Go figure .
