Remember Mayberry?

I see by the news that Andy Griffith has died. He, and his Mayberry shows meant a lot to us. He'll always be seen in that role.

And "Mayberry" has become a part of our language. We picture a small town as a "Mayberry"

But somehow, there are those that feel that there is something wrong with wanting to be part of that small town community. They want their town to grow, progress, be important.

What's wrong with living in a spot "where everybody knows your name?" Do we really need the big city with all it's problems?

Is Progress always a good thing?

We'll always have Mayberry. Thanks Andy!

Love small towns, will miss Andy. Opie sure grew up to be a force to be recond with.

I will miss Andy! Such wisdom. Great writers for that show and he got the point across very well. Although, I think my favorite show is when Opie gets the point across. He wants to save his money for his girlfriend rather than give it to some charity the school is pushing, and Andy thinks it's to buy her a trinket. In reality, he wants to buy her a coat. Charity in the best way!

My former boss hated his small town. When he walked into the bank and the teller said, "Oh, you've gotten a raise". That's what is what was wrong with a small town to him. I think small towns are good as long as you're in the clique. Has nothing to do with progress. But I sure love having everything close and being able to get to it in my medium sized town. I guess that is what is so good about Nashville. I know a lot of people all over, but I have my privacy too.

Oh how nice you are. Ingrid, I have admired the lovely photos of your garden, thank you for your comments. There is one bush in my little garden that I am watching for a couple of years to see if it is staying. Thank you Jennie, I like to see a garden instead of just close-ups...but I love them to. Thanks Jeff. The fence came in sections from Lowe's I paint everything the same mossy green color. It was black originally. Rosefolly, I appreciate the kind comments from someone with so much knowledge...the trees are quite mature. The background was recently marred by Alabama Power deciding that a lush fig tree posed some danger to them. that's what caused the weird mess on the right corner. (fig trees are tough. It's regrowing.) kay

Thank you all for looking and commenting. I love seeing the blooms, but dread seeing the flush drop to just a few. Ben, Thank you, when I look at my garden I see the flaws, and your kind words are much appreciated. You picked two good one. Linda Agin bred such gorgeous selections, and there is no telling how many other beauties like Linda Beck she would have given us had she not left at such a young age. Cindy and Vickie, I always feel guilty if I post more than 3 photos, but you'll notice I do it anyway. Thanks Rita, I am just waiting to see what else you will put up that I'll decide I have to have this year. Debra and Ellie, Bodacious Blush was a bonus from Bill Maryott. It is not only a very prolific bloomer, but last year (first year) it was a very prolific and long lasting re-bloomer! Just a great plant. Jean, No, I don't have deer. It is the plus side of living in Mayberry USA. I also have a neighbor with beagles, and I don't think any deer would be foolish enough to come near that howling bunch if it found its way here. Snakes Alive! or Dead

Rita and Ann, Alabama has several poisonous snakes, and the place this one was hiding was the type of place you would be careful about due to taller grass. Since I couldn't do much in the yard earlier this summer, areas like this were allowed to grow too wild. (DH was under the weather a good part of the year...simple grass cutting was it for him, and my knee kept me indoors). Anyway, I don't bother snakes that are not aggressive. He acted more like a water moccasin (which he wasn't) than a rattler. A water moccasin will come after you out of pure meaness. Rattlers usually have enough sense to crawl off, and if he had done that, he would have lived. No kids here, but the chichahuas would have gone after him if they had seen him, which would have given DH a heart attack :-). Good thing the snake was aggressive, I guess since he is now dead. This area I was working in has wonderful soil, unlike most of mine. It was brought here for top soil by a very nice fellow. It, unfortunately has some very aggressive weeds. (think passion vine and nut grass, maybe the snake took it from them.) This little town we now live in is "Mayberry USA", so DH, who knows I am going to clear that area, and worried that the snake had brothers, told me he would burn it tomorrow. (There's no fire danger here at all, and burning is allowed). So tomorrow, I will see what is left after the "big burn-out). Passion vine roots for sure, but I have been making great headway against them, and I WILL get them. kay

Gary, Oh, I don't "think" you said enough to get yourself in trouble. I am sure the GW admin can distinguish between an innocent mention of one's livelihood versus blatant advertising. I am not sure how strongly the rule is enforced, but the rule as I understand it is that no commercial advertising is allowed in any of the forums. If you say something about your business that they think comes too close to advertising, I think they send you a "warning" by e-mail. Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned your operation. How else would someone like me down here in southern OK know you were up there in northern OK? I'm glad to know we have someone else up there (in addition to Lisa) growing heirlooms that we can refer people to when they're searching for plants or for information, answers to the hardest tomato questions, etc..... Maybe you cannot refer people here to your operation, but the rest of us can. There's a guy in Texas who sells heirloom tomatoes by mail but ONLY mails them within the state of Texas. (He has a real job and trying to mail them all over the country is too time-consuming for a part-timer.) I've always wished 'somebody' here in Oklahoma had that kind of business because lots of folks here want to try heirlooms and some people don't have the space to start seeds indoors or their job takes them out of town too much, etc. Finally, what would any of us do if a late freeze (or baseball-sized hail or a tornado or a wildfire) wiped out every plant we had in the ground in, let's say, early May? Would we be forced to grow only hybrids? Well, it wouldn't be the worst thing on earth, but it would be close. No. We'd send out an SOS and find someone in the state of Oklahoma who raises/sells heirlooms and we'd be hoping and praying we could find someone like that. So, you see, we NEEDED to know that you are there. Laspasturas, Welcome home to Oklahoma and also welcome to the Oklahoma forum. I'm glad you decided to stop lurking and start 'talking' to us. I read over your list and think most everything you have on it ought to grow just fine here. If there's one that might not produce well here, it likely would be German Red Strawberry since the heart types don't generally produce well in our endless and brutal summer heat. I grow indeterminates in containers and, in general, they perform quite well there. The larger the container, the better they perform. I grow indeterminates in containers of all sizes from cat litter buckets that seem slightly smaller than 5-gallon buckets (I've never measured to see how much the buckets hold but guess 4 to 5 gallons) to molasses feed tubs (about the size of a half-whiskey barrel, so I'm guessing 20 gallons or so?). To grow in containers here in OK, you have to pay careful attention to watering. In our hottest weather, and by that I'd say anything up to about 105 degrees, the containers may need to be watered twice a day. When the temp goes over 105, I drape old bedsheets over my containerize plants to shade them and then water them at meal times: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Luckily, that kind of heat usually only lasts a few days. Because Oklahoma's heat is so brutal, I try to strategically place my containers where the plants will receive 6 to 8 hours of direct sun and no more than that. I get better production from those plants than from containers placed to that they get sun for 8 to 10 to 12 hours a day. The plants also are happier if they are not lined up alongside a driveway, patio or south or west-facing wall that reflects a lot of heat up onto them. And, light-colored containers reflect heat away from the roots better than dark-colored containers do. AND, I spray-paint my kitty litter buckets a nice shade of green or blue (using Krylon Fusion paint designed specifically for plastics) so I don't look too much like a redneck gardener (not that there's anything wrong with being a redneck gardener). I don't think that your questions about how many tomatoes to grow for canning or dehydrating is a hijacking of the thread at all, but I am worried that people with a similar question in the future wouldn't find this thread if they do a GW search because the search feature here is a little squirrelly (with no dispect to our friends the squirrels). So, if it is OK with you, I'll start a separate thread about growing tomatoes for canning and drying and such in the hope that by putting the words canning and drying in the title, it will ensure future searches find that thread. For a real treat...wander over to YOUTUBE and check out some of the old Andy routines.

They don't make'em like that any more.

I especially liked the ones about football. Andy's description of "Hamlet" was not like anything you have ever seen before.

I loved that show! I loved Ernest T. Bass. 'specially when he's "heaving potatoes" when learning manners. heh I didn't find Hamlet (I think they're just calling it Horatio, I'll go check), but I did Romeo and Juliet. HA! Oh my goodness. Great fun.

Andy Griffith and Mayberry stood for decency and could express life, not only for a small town, without cursing and sleaze. If your really wanted to laugh, Mayberry was the show to watch and Andy Griffith lived his life as close as could be to his role. If I have the choice between today's shows and Mayberry, I watch reruns of the later.

It surely did work, and it was good. Thanks! I think I had in mind that it was Hamlet+Andy Griffith show rather than just his own work (although Romeo and Juliet was his own work they incorporated into the show).

anneliese, I wish there were more real people like him. I loved his way.

RIP Andy Griffith, you made your mark,
One does not have to live in a small town to think one is living in a small town. One can live in a neighborhood in a city where where everyone knows you and the neighborhood can be just a intimate as a small town.

Neil has the original records that Andy first recorded.
We loved Mayberry and still watch it.
My children grew up watching Mayberry and I was grateful
that I could count on Andy to back me up while I tried
to raise them to be respectful, compassionate and honest.

In a time when ( reality tv ) has replaced brilliant
writing and quality television, reruns of Mayberry and old
movies are a breath of fresh air.

My son and I sat down every afternoon,usually around 4 or 5 to watch Andy. I had just gotten home from a day in the classroom and it was always relaxing to watch this before starting dinner and DH would arrive home. A s soon as the show was over,I would feed the dogs and one of them knew that the Mayberry theme song meant dinner and the minute he heard the music,he would run into the kitchen and stand by his food bowl.

Marda, you gave me the biggest guffaw! I heard the theme song when I read it and then I envisioned the dog gallumphing to it's food bowl. It's kinda like Mission Impossible's theme-once you hear it becomes stuck in your head! Even for dogs. heh

That IS a funny story, mwoods, and a smart dog!

I live in a very small town, but until a few years ago, I lived in a large city, in cookie-cutter suburbia, so I know both. I like when the waitress at the restaurant down the street asks about my son even if he's not with me that time. I like not needing to send my ID through the tube at the bank because they recognize me. The lady at the garden store asks about my Mom and how my plants that she agreed to special-order for me are doing. It's a much more accountable existence. Most people who are bothered by others knowing what they are doing are probably up to no good. Definitely if you live in a small town, a lot of conversations start out, "I saw you..."

It is sad that people are so busy "doing things" they hardly have or take time to just sit and talk. My honey and I sit on the front porch and talk for a while most evenings while we watch the sun go down and/or the busy busy birds. Priceless! It never gets boring to me. Those were always my favorite moments in Mayberry, the conversations on Andy's front porch.

RIP, Andy. We loved you well!

TVLD had an Andy Griffith Show marathon on Saturday, and I loved seeing so many episodes of that wonderful show.

My SIL's late cockatoo could whistle the beginning of the theme song.

Andy will truly be missed.

I have to disagree about him being up to no good. The person I was talking about is the kindest, most wonderful person I know. He's the only one who beats out my mom in the kindness department. They are so so so kind and couldn't even think about doing anything wrong. I love them both so much. The tellers in my bank know me well and the coffee shop folks always ask me about my son. Doesn't take a small town to live that part of Americana :) But then, I must have the best of both worlds. Not too small, not too large.

One does not have to live in a small town to feel like it's a small town.
When I was a child I lived 3 blocks from the centrum of Oslo, Norway. In our neighborhood, everyone knew each other and there were "eyes" everywhere. Lol, it was not a case of "I saw you..." , it was a case of if I even had a bad thought, let alone doing a bad deed, someone would go to my Family and "report" my behavior. I did not do anything "bad".
When I came to this country I visited some friends in "Little Norway" in Brooklyn, NY. Within one day a whole lot of people knew I was there (smoke signals perhaps) and welcomed me like family.
Once I got on the subway back to NY city, no one knew me. I'm ok with both worlds.
