To be honest I've never noticed any difference in the flowering rate of kingianums when the keikis have or haven't been removed. Those forms which flower on old canes will happily send up spikes on the same canes the keikis are growing on (if they're mature enough, the keikis will also flower while still on the parent, increasing the flower count). The main problem is that a plant that's bearing a lot of keikis turns into a straggly mess after a few years and the resulting congestion can affect the shape and direction of the new canes. If you want new plants wait until the roots grow a couple of inches and remove them. If you don't, you may as well pull them off now.

If I leave the keikis on until after the next blooming cyle, can I harvest the keikis then? This way I should have more mature keikis to start a new pot, and, my original plant will not be disfigured.

That should be fine. When I say keiki's disfigure the growth, this usually occurs after a few years when the keikis have formed several new canes themselves. Removing them within a year or two doesn't cause much of a problem. If you like the look of keikis upon keikis upon keikis you probably wouldn't think it's a problem in the first place. My only real advice is to remove them before the roots grow into the parent's media or start clinging to the parent cane. In either scenario they can be a pain to remove without damaging the roots.

I have always advised removing keikis after flowering, since keikis form keiks and these form keikis and one ends up with a tangled mess. New keikis should be left on the plant as they will increase the number of flowers; also, they will not have sufficient roots to likely survive if removed prior to flowering. If the mother plant is not of a quality to make propagation worthwhile, then do not save any and you need to obtain a new clone of better quality.

Thank you Dr. Neptune. I believe your post is concurrent with Andrews. However, if my plant is of propagation quality I do not know -other than it bloomed profusely last winter.

A more urgend question is how to re-pot it, which, I believe should be done as the basket is packed with canes. Either I have to cut the woven basket or put it into a larger one, filling the empty spaces with a medium of bark and pummice.
In order to achieve a neater look I'd prefer to cut the present basket and move the clump into a larger container.

What is your opinion?

B.t.w... my Cyp "Inge" is alive and well, growing under lights in a pot of mostly pummice and pine duff. I hope to grow it through the summer until it goes into natural dormancy.

After flowering is the time to repot if there is not enough room for the coming year's growth. DO NOT cut it up as the larger the plant the better the show. Do not disturb the roots, but pot up to a size to allow the new growth enough room. This plant likes to be tight in the pot, and it may need potting up every year. I cut mine up after it is too large to manage.

Dr. Neptune, I did not mean to say to devide, the orchid - rather to cut the basket as I suspect the roots have grown into its weave. If I wait until next blooming season re-potting should become the more difficult.
