As best as I can tell from the photo, you have a male plant. Female flowers will look quite similar but have distinctive white filaments in the center of the flower. Here is a link that might be useful: kiwi flower comparison

Hi, Sorry the picture is not terribly helpful. The leaves are opposite each other on the stems. The flowers are relatively small and white with five round petals. The flowers do seem to give off a fragrance, but I personally do not find it to be a very nice smell. I looked up both of your suggestions and I think it looks somewhat like Philadelphus virginalis, but it is hard to tell. I think I may move this shrub to a different location so I don't feel as compelled to prune the life out of it as it grows in front of the front door and windows. Thank you for your help! I grow the Sweet Autumn clematis, and have for about 5 years. It is still in the same spot, has not traveled anywhere. The secret to keeping it in check is to cut it way back, like to the ground in very early spring. That does away with all the ugly stuff underneath too, that will accumulate if you don't cut it back. I love this vine. It is pretty when things are very tough in our climate. I have never had it reseed, and it has never offered to layer where it hit the ground. Bummer..... Janie

It's the Double Bridal Wreath Spiraea! It is different than simply Bridal Wreath Spiraea in that the flowers have more petals. And interestingly, one site even mentioned, "Is not native, but has been used since pre-civil war times around houses in the south. A poor spirea that has a good name. Needs to be kept pruned to look good." This gives me an idea both how old the remains of the house might be that it is next to, and also how to try and get it blooming and healthy again!
