#3 is Crassula ovata 'Gollum' 'Skinny Fingers' is a variety of 'Gollum' and thier is one more variety called 'Coral' that came from Europe a giant form the the above mentioned' Gollum' You have several 'Jade' plants in the pictures. One is very white and may not live. You also have a plant that looks like "Jade" but I believe could be Senecio 'Jacobsonii' which is a trailing plant. Don't let it fool you. The one with the red flowers, it 'Red Apple' can't recall the "Latin name" oh, yes 'Apetina". I am so glad to see that you are interested in names, many people are not and tease me because I am. Jo Jo I am pretty sure that you are right about #5 Crassula platyphylla This one of the reasons we need to know the names, if you have a problem with one of these just tell me that name, and see If we can be of help. If you refer to them as Lilium Tigrinum everyone will immediately know what you're dealing with... as opposed to the "ditch lilies" many find pesky. Your tigers are the easiest of the lilies to grow and have great success with. They just never seem to disappoint especially if you've got a sunny spot with good drainage. Personally, I would not soak them - just crumble the soil away from the bulbs by hand to separate them out then plant the bulbs at least 6" deep... the top of the bulb below where the stem starts should be the 6" beneath the soil line. They're tough, you can't hurt them even if you accidently break off a stalk which by now should be starting to yellow out. Water them in and forget them till they emerge in the spring. Check out the Lilies Forum, too. Aside from getting the lilies into the ground - I'd probably spend this time preparing any future planting beds and making a few elimentary plans before doing any planting. There are all kinds of ground covers - from Uva-Ursi (bearberry) or Sedums like Dragon's Blood to creeping Junipers, etc. What do you like and what do you want to look at from what vantage point; and are you planting things for your own pleasure or for curb appeal? Think you'll be happier with any results by working out a basic plan.

It would still help to know where you are gardening if you would like more pertinent climate specific plant recommendations. Unless you are up in the Sierra Nevada foothills at sufficient elevation to receive significant snowfall, it is also highly unlikely you are receiving 6 feet of rain in an average year. Kentfield in Marin County is one of the local wettest spots in the SF Bay Area, and even they don't get this much rain. The normal range of precipitation is more in the 20 to 40 inches range for coastal northern California, unless you are getting particular increased rainfall from mountain uplift rain effect as Kentfield or Ben Lomond do. There are quite a few Western Cape species that are well adapted to seasonally wet/saturated winter soils that later dry out in summer, so winter wet soils are not the problem. The majority of these plants will not take hard frost in combination with winter wet, as they are lower elevation or coastal in habitat. The higher elevation plants from the Drakensberg Mountains are dry in winter and wet in summer, so you will also have to be more careful of providing good winter drainage for anything from there, although most plants from this summer rainfall/high elevation mountains will be more winter cold adapted.

Very nice photos :o) I'm not good at identification with no books for reference but yes, #3 Garlic Mustard HAS TO GO... it is an EXTREMELY prolific alien invasive weed very difficult to control once it gets a foothold. This time of year it is easy to see from it's upright growth and flowers atop. Pull them from the lowest point possible. There is a "nub" at the base of the stem and if you get your fingers just below that nub the whole plant will come out roots and all. These things sew zillions of seeds so it's best to get them out now before the flowers go to seed. #4 & #27 are Jacks. Young jacks DO look like trilliums. #15 looks like very young jacks. #9 & #12 do look like Arrowood viburnum to me as well. #10 looked like false solomon's seal to me (thought I saw a flower bud at the distal end of the stalk. Did they flower underneath? #11 looks like a "cornus" (dogwood) species 14 is definitely real sololmon's seal by the flowers falling under the stalk. #19 and #22 both appear to be Sensitive Fern #26 Looks like plants I have in my window "Hawkweed". Mine are orange but there is also yellow. I like these very much but they aren't native here. I have them planted in the window boxes of my shed, in window planters on my house and in my front garden. #33. Wild violets as everyone else has said. Good luck with your identifications :o) Barb
