Sneaky Raccoon Eating chunks of Perlite

I don't know what to do. Last night I actually caught him in the act and threw pennies and sprayed him with my mister. For a while, I had all the plants protected by some more "brutal" plants (dyckia, the "horse crippler" cactus), which worked for a while, but I have to many non-brutal plants now. There has of yet been no actual damage to any of the orchids, but its an inevitability, I feel.

And he's so fat and slow, and there's so much trash all over the place here in Austin, I don't see why he has chosen to dig the soil out of the lavender pot and try repeatedly to eat chunks of perlite from the orchid pots.

Has anyone else had small mammal problems?
