Yet another what Orchid is this

"Hi" I ran across this Orchid at a clients house, is was in a broken teracota pot and in need of some TLC. The lady did not know it's name. She said if I wanted it I could take it? Needless to say, I took it home. I split it in to three and the pix at photobucket shows one of the first flowers and a shot of the growth. I only play with growing, not a serious grower. Sobralia, looks like it; which one - cannot tell, as these guys are a rare find here :)

My first call would have been a small shrub Osmanthus Goshiki. Zone 8 is perfect as is 3X3. Gashiki means 5 colored leaf. Certainly beats any perennial I know of for 12 month display. OTOH, Osmanthus means false holly so the leaves look spikey, but I own a bunch and they have never bothered me. My second choice would be a dwarf oleander petite pink perhaps. I do not know your zone well. But zone 8 should be able. If goshiki and oleander fail, there is a dwarf nandina. I wouldn't expect any berries. But here are some with good foliage at that size. I do not know all the cultivars, but one has truely skeletal leaves. Beyond those three, we have gardenia, otto luykens (sp), verigated box leafed euonymous, beni kawa japanese maple, rosemary for the fragrance from people who brush against it. (rosemary also blooms late winter.) I'd also look at one of the dwarf formsa of verigated red-twigged dogwood. Red stems all winter. Lovely verigated foliage the rest of the year. But they get 6X6. so you have to look for the smaller sizes. (I'd move this one to number 3.)

I wouldn't assume that just because you have one doubleheaded bloom that it is due to a virus. At the beginning of the summer, several different types of plants of mine had one or two of those, but all the rest of the blooms since then, have been perfectly normal. I did pinch those off though, so they didn't produce any seeds. I remember a couple like that early last year too, so I don't think that it's necessarily a sign of disease. Bonnie

I am no specialist, but get into a few gardens in my work, and I had not noticed any orchid like this around before. I can not help myself, when I see a neglected plant, or at least when they are an odd ball.
I think this one must be fairly hardy, as my client said. 'nobody did a thing for it, and it just kept on flowering, sitting outside.' She did not know it's name and said that friend had given it to her a long time ago. I have not had it a year, and it flowered about 4/5 months after I got it.

what size are the flowers?
how tall is the plant
I pot mine in sphasnum in clay pots and water every other day during the growing period, where are you at?
when I lived in PA, I grew them in osmunda fiber in pastic

Sorry it has been so long since you asked me:
what size are the flowers? Flowers were about 4in across.
how tall is the plant. I would think they grow up to 2ft stems.
I pot mine in sphasnum in clay pots and water every other day during the growing period, where are you at? I have to say as I did not know what they were, I just mixed up a concoction, split the plant into 3x sections and planted them up. I live in Auckland. New Zealand. It flowered in December. It looks like it flowers on stems that are 2x years old, then those stems die. I must say going back and looking at the pix of plant, they have done exceptionally well, as I have only just had these a year, now.
