Repotting Den in solid coconut thingie

The Phal-type Den (Den Gusto 'NCOS #1' x Den Mother Teresa 'Arbec' AM/AOS) has all its roots in a solid, round chunk of coconut whatever-you-call-it. In the clay pot, it's surrounded by smallish coconut chips, but there aren't enough to give solid support. The top half of the big chunk is exposed to the air.

Coconut and I haven't bonded, plus in my environment, most orchids do best in sphag & plastic, including Dens.

I'd rather not buy coconut husk. My theory is that there needs to be more medium around the coconut chunk to maintain moisture, but what would you advise?

- stones on top of the small coconut pieces for stability?

- sphag to replace the coconut pieces?

- sphag on top of the coconut pieces?

- medium bark on top of the coconut pieces?

- something else?

Regardless, can the whole thing go in plastic?

Thanks, Whitecat8
