Bat removal

Dh's twin brother was talking about the bat problem at his employers warehouse. They are having serious problems with them coming in and nesting. They aren't allowed to harm them or even touch them and they are looking for a way to make the bats look elsewhere for a home without spending hundreds of thousands. I suggested fluorescent light starters with a bad hum to mess up their signals as a joke but that may not be such a bad idea according to the stuff that came up on a Google search. The problem is the warehouse is huge. Does anyone have any suggestions about getting them to leave? Sandy

How are they getting in? If you can block the places where they get in then you wait until they are gone at night and block their re-entry places. Don't trap them inside or they will die inside and stink up the place. Most likely there are openings up in the rafters or roof. It does not take much of an opening for a bat to squeeze in. I had some in an attic one time and it was because during a storm the attic vent cover (just a small one on the front of the house shaped like a small triangle) had blown down. My husband put it back up just as I noticed the screening that had been behind it was still on the ground. Well, he said tough I'm done. Later that summer as I had a cup of coffee on the front porch in the early morning, the bats would return from their nightly insect feeding in the corn fields and fly right into the tiny sliver of an opening in that vent to roost in the attic. We didn't notice any problem with them as I don't think there were that many, but the point being it was a small, slatted vent and they could get in. Sometimes one would bump into the slat and miss, but then it would try again and get part-way in and then scramble the rest of the way in, squeezing through sideways if need be.

Female bats like warmer places than the males bats.

And you are right - don't kill them. Bats are important. They can't help it the warehouse is a perfect roost to them. Build it and they will come. Build it right and they won't get in.

You need to prevent them from getting in by watching in the early morning when they come in, to find the places that need to be covered with the screening. Then lock them out during the night when they are off hunting by screening off the openings. They will be forced to go somewhere else. In a big warehouse it may take a while to find all the places they get in, but if you keep at it you will do it.

If they are not flying in and out right now, but holed up due to cold weather, then wait until they are on the move when the weather warms up. They do leave each night to eat, like clockwork.

Sorry, bats urinate and leave their feces in their nesting places. Bats do carry Rabies. We just had a notice in the local paper about a rabid bat being found in town. A family I know all had to take the Rabies shot series after Rabid bats were found in the house. Not a nice shot to need. All your pet should be vaccinated for Rabies, so they can't pass it on to you if they should catch a bat. Even the animals who are only in the house. So for me, I don't wish to share the house! I would want bats removed, gently, peacefully if possible. They need to nest outside. I would put up bat houses, make locations they could nest safely to eat bugs around our home. I like bats, just don't want to share the house. I catch our bats with a tennis racquet, which they don't seem able to get an echo from to avoid. I gently stop them and quickly pin them down on the floor, slide a newspaper under and let them go outside. All have flown off, undamaged. We seem to get a couple in the house each year, amazing how they can hide when you hunt for them. I would try to caulk up any small holes, seams in my siding, around chimneys, to exclude their being able to get back in. This would be a spring and fall job, when there are no babies. Probably an evening job, after they leave the nesting area so none are left inside to die. Here in MI, they talk about bats migrating north for winter hibernation in caves. Locations are kept secret because bats are so vulnerable when sleeping or nesting in hibernation. Some jerk always ready to wreck things which harm no one. I think the local ones have winter nesting places. Sometimes you see one in winter, kind of dazed acting from being awake when he shouldn't be. Could also be sick, I just avoid them. Again, I would not want them in the house. Years of pee and poop had to be hard on the structure of the home. Smell isn't good for your lungs either. Same reason you would get rid of infestations of Asian/fake ladybugs or wasps inside your walls. Not good for people. Some folks we know found those infestations, had to totally rebuild the whole wall of homes. Just INCREDIBLE amounts of waste, nests, and insects on the rotten wood and building materials, quite expensive and time consuming. Caused asthma attacks in the family.

The water fills the box from the bottom up, so then it would be below the biomedia. I put some in the bottom last night, woke up this morning to a half empty pond. Can't find any sign of the leak but since my only change was to the waterfall filter, I pulled the batting out, refilled the pond, and am hoping that maybe the added restriction of the batting caused pressure on the line and caused the hose or bulkhead to leak. Going to check the water levels in an hour or two. And if we get a day or two without rain, at least I'd be able to look for wet ground. Right now the whole yard is sopping.

I operate a bat exclusion company in central Florida. I get many requests from people that sound like this: "can you please trap some bats for me and put them in my bat house?" It doesn't work that way! The bats have to find the bat house on their own, and they are more likely to do so if you follow the BCI guidelines posted above. Also, this post proves that people want bats. If you do have bats in your house, it might be a blessing! Don't be so quick to try to get rid of them. Cute little devils, aren't they? The two inches of mice droppings are actually probably bat guano, not mouse droppings. Very good for the garden, though, full of nitrogen. You can shop vac them up (the droppings, not the bats!) and it will clean up and leave less smell residue than mouse droppings as there is usually less of a bat urine smell (maybe they pee outdoors on the wing), unlike mice who pee where they poop. Once you've got them removed, you'll need to do a meticulous job of re-sealing of even tiny cracks or other bats will find your attic and re-colonize. So, before they are removed study the exterior well to see where they are entering; this is best done in the evening and very early morning when they are returning from a night's bug-catching. But you will have to look for alternate holes as well, as they are really fixated on their roosts and return year after year to the same ones. Depending on where you are, you can also just wait for them to leave for their winter hibernation dens, then seal the walls up to prevent them from coming back next spring. That would save the cost of a bat-removal. Another thing you might do is provide some bright lighting to the area at night through sunrise. Bats like to sleep in the dark and you might discourage them from coming in to roost. But make sure it's safe lighting that won't cause a fire. Bats eats zillions of biting bugs every night, so removing a large colony will change the bug dynamics at your place. But on the other side of the coin, bats can be vectors for rabies, and it is possible for sleeping people (especially young children) to have contact with rabid bats and not realize it until too late. If you should find a dead bat in a sleeping room, contact your doctor and health department immediately. On the whole, bats are nice, useful, critters. I have tons of them in my barns, and even my attics. (I reluctantly tolerate them there, but would rather they stayed in the barn.) They all fly off somewhere for the winter; I'm not sure how I would feel if they were around 12 months of the year. After all the bats are gone, you can look and see if any insulation must be replaced. The good thing about bats is that the dropping piles are usually fairly concentrated so you won't have much too much to do. There are some great books on bats. Looking at pictures of them will scare the bejabbers out of you, though. I lived for many years in areas with large (14" wingspan) fruit-eating bats and medium sized vampire (biting) bats, so the much smaller ones in North America seem pretty tame. Though I hate having one flying around in the house! Just keep thinking of the thousands of mosquitos and black flies and biting gnats they eat every night.....! It's surprising you had two inches of droppings, that takes awhile to accumulate. Fifty years ago, when I was a young girl, my family spent a fair amount of time at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. In those days it wasn't a big, international tourist attraction and one could wander pretty much at will through the various temples. My sister and I sometimes clambered up over piles of bat dung a yard or more high to get into some of the buildings. Now that's a LOT of bat poop! And man, did it stink in that heat....! Molly~

Well I just read FTM's methods and my method is not approved. It is the same principle though - get them out and don't let them get back in. Follow FTMs official site as they are the experts.

I have bats in my attic and really need them gone one got into my house last night. I need some other method then filling cracks and stuff like that i am petrified of them and want them out all at once then I will seal and screen and anything else need be. But how can I get them out during the day and do the sealing I need done so I can lay down and sleep at night?

While some of the ideas posted are correct, in a general sense, there is also misinformation posted.
Bats, do not always leave, like clockwork. There are different reasons why they may not come out right at dusk. We sealed a 3 story brick building this week that has literally hundreds of bats. After the first days work, we hung around to see if they would fly out. About 7 came out of the main entry's and we waited till almost 9:00. (September) We verified a lot of bats inside that afternoon.
Usually, but esp. with bats, methods besides eviction and sealing such as lighting, etc. are cost prohibitive or not effective at all. What we usually see is people exhausting all these options, then calling us in the end and it ends up costing them more in the long run than if they had called a professional in the first place.
Don't always assume that bat proofing a home is a lot of money. We charge a nominal inspection fee to look at the building and give you an exact price on what it would take to remove them once and for all. Please be aware that there is no way you can verify weather all the bats are out of a building at night or not. Just because you don't see the on a rafter like you always do in the attic, does not mean they are not inside. Often,they will hide under insulation batting or other, unseen places.
Book or internet information can be good or can be misleading.
You can learn about raising, say, orchids in a book but until you do it for a living, your only getting part of the picture.
