What veggies can I plant that Deer and critters won't eat?
Comments (36)Well Jack, you are wrong, again! I did not "do a search for 'are there any vegetables that critters will not eat' when you already knew the answer was no". You see, after I finished reading all of these wonderful and informative comments, I did further research and LEARNED (because I am still capable of admitting I don't know everything) that deer/critters in one area will eat some things while deer/critters in other areas eat other things and that most vegetables will ultimately be subject to deer/critter consumption. But you have to admit you have a way of going off topic....See MoreRed ants eating plants
Comments (5)Hi Laurie I didn't have that problem when I grew the yard long beans. The ants are probably after the aphids honeydew. I would give the plants a spray of water to get rid of the aphids and after that I would put any of the remedies listed below, re apply after a rain. Silvia Here is a link that might be useful: ants...See MoreHelp with ants eating my lilies!
Comments (4)In looking at your picture closely, I see the damage you're talking about. Its not ants. Most likely its another tiny little insect which looking for a place to lay its eggs, most likely in the developing seed pod where it knows its larvae will be well nourished. You might try an insect spray made by S.C. Johnson (Johnson Wax) thats safe for indoor house plants. It won't hurt your lily. When your lily is done flowwering, cut the flower head off; leave the stem and leaves to rebuild the bulb for next Spring. Fertilize lightly once and water lightly until it dies back in the fall, then cut off about two inches above surface....See MoreDo ants actually raise aphids to eat on your plants
Comments (1)Not all ants like aphids but more than one species of ant likes various species of aphids. The aphids have to show up first. Nearby ants then detect the honeydew liquid secreted by the aphids; this is what the ants are interested in as a food source. Ants do not raise aphids, but they may discourage other insects that would eat the aphids, so they are more of a protector than a farmer. Ants can crawl on plants for a number of reasons. If there are aphids on your plants they will be on the newest growth; curled or distorted growth occurs if the aphids are numerous. Spraying with a hard stream of water or using insecticidal oils or soaps are common ways of controlling aphids. Tanglefoot applied to the base of a plant can reduce ants from climbing up.
