Timing matters a lot for codling moth- use traps to catch the males, and once you have a few males count the days (depends on temperature) until a spray will catch the eggs laid by the fertile females. Call your local extension people for exact timing. You have to get a spray on the young fruit that will quickly kill the hatching eggs. Malathion will work if perfectly timed; triazicide stays around longer and works well. Spinosad will work with good timing (and you have a little more freedom with multiple sprays) and may even kill even penetrating larvae, which means that they don't die until they've gotten into the apple a bit, but they don't go on to destroy the apple from the inside out. Just from my limited experience. CM is my main pest issue here. Good luck, M

Yep Fruitnut, already. Looking at my temp data for the last week plus is a little interesting when looking the highs and lows for the days and going to the chart provided by UC I seldom accumulate any degree days because it either got too hot or cold for the 24 hr periods but I'm catching moths during those periods. The sunset temps have pretty consistently reached at least 62 so it makes sense the moths are flying. I just can't figure out yet when peak flight will be/is. The subsequent egg hatch would be based on the accumulated DD from biofix. One source states that peak flight is about 2 weeks after full bloom and that the eggs develop in 8 - 14 days so that the 1st cover should be applied 8 - 14 days after petal fall. All of that is no doubt temperature dependent. Sure is a bugger figuring this stuff out. I even tried too look up a good pic of what a sting looks like on young fruit like mine is now about 1/4" diameter or less, no luck.

That looks like some shot-hole on those end leaves. For the ex-blossom parts I can't tell whats going on from the pictures but you may have brown rot blossom blight, it basically rots the blossoms. You need to start doing dormant sprays of copper or lime/sulphur for sure, both at leaf fall and just before leaves come out in the spring. For the brown rot if thats what you have get some Monterey Garden Fungi-fighter for example and spray that right now. Before doing anything, look at more pictures online, in particular of brown rot blossom blight and other blossom blights and see what matches. I do think you have multiple diseases together and that can make diagnosis harder. Pears don't get the same shot-hole the plums get and I'd need to see pictures to know whats going on there. For worms, look at how to control codling moth and oriental fruit moth in the pears and plums, respectively. Scott

Heather: Bag your apples in ziploc sandwich bags. There is lots of info on preparing and installing the bags in recent threads on this forum. Once the bags are installed, you can forget about damage from codling moth and most other insects, and you can quite spraying. I can't diagnose what has happened to your apples so far, but if it is codling moth there will be black frass around the core. Often, you can trim up the apple and there is still a lot of good apple to eat. Next season, get your ziploc bags on earlier, just after thinning the apples. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA
