ID questions; Wild, similar to Oregano/Marjoram, but different

I have a plant that I've seen growing in the mountains near Sunol Regional Wilderness. The plant is perennial. An image is available here:

In appearance, it is very similar to Oregano/Wild Marjoram (I call it Feral Oregano), but there are several distinct differences:

1. the scent is not attractive at all, my best description is "medicinal"; I can't imagine anyone cooking with it, even someone explorative as myself.

2. the only place I've seen it growing is in rocky terrain along mountain ridges in this park; it doesn't seem to like alot of moisture, and it seems to require direct sun. The normal oreganae are usually documented as preferring light, rich soils.

So *is* this still an Oregano species? Maybe a hybrid of some sort? Or is it an unrelated species which just resembles the herb?
