It's time to think Mexico again...

Okie, dokie, my friends, I'm getting the itch to see something other than brown and grey on my landscape! We don't even have any snow to break the monotony, when we should have 3 feet by now. And with cheap fares to Mexico, Jamaica, etc. Well...

So, keeping in mind that I'm a poor vet tech and a) don't want or need 5 star, b) don't want or need all-inclusive drinks and a wild nightlife, and c) like to explore an area rather than just soak up the sun - though sitting by the pool or ocean with a good book is very appealing, just not for a week. I'm hoping you can share your Mexican or Caribean picks.

Whats your favorite Mexican or Caribean vacation spot? And why?

That would be Caribbean, not Caribean - which we know is the locals favorite coffee from the exotic 'Cari' bean.

Jim I am so glad you have had some memorable hummer experiences this year. The migration is still in full swing and I have three here right now. My last adult male left on Sept 1st. and the last adult female departed about a week ago. I have at least one juvenile male and 2 juvenile females but with the juvies until they start getting some of their adult plumage it is difficult to tell the males from the females. Most of my adult birds this year were strictly feeder birds. They were definitely fast food junkies but once the juvies came on the scene both feeders and flowers were in high use. I have an old clothesline that we cut done to be used in a smaller area for the hummers and they loved perching by the door first thing in the morning after they had breakfast watching and waiting and several would greet me when I walked out the door. If I was replaceing a feeder with a fresh one I always had one come right up to the feeder as I was hanging it back up. They also liked to perch on that line and watch me while I mowed the grass or collected flower seeds. Several times they flew up to me when I was removing dead flower stalks to check out what I was doing. A couple of times I had a female come in so close that I could feel the breeze from her wing flapping against my cheek. Remember to keep those feeders fresh especially when we have had the hot dry temps we had this summer. I never leave a feeder over two days as the nectar will start to ferment and if they do drink it, they can get sick. Often times they will just abandon the feeder. Even if you think all of your hummers have gone for the season, please consider leaving those feeders up for at least 2-3 weeks after your last siting as there are still quite a few migrants north of us that are yet to head south. There are large swarms still in Mich and Wisc. and quite a few swarms still over in Ontario from what I understand. If you can maintain at least one feeder until we get hard freezing temps please consider doing so. There are more and more reports of out of territory migrants showing up all the time. There is a Green-breated Mango Hummingbird that has shown up in Wisconsin whose most northern natural range is Mexico. Here is a picture of the Green-Breasted Mango. There have been Rufous in Ontario, Rufous and Calliopes in Pa. so you never know, a stray, out of range migrant could just as easily show up in NY. The problem I have is with the Cuban Anole, a carnivore lizard. They have killed all the mockingbird hatchlings in my yard for the past 5 years. One year, the mom made a nest in a dracena which was not strong enough nor provided enough protection but perhaps it was to stay away from the green dragon, IDK. Anyway, I found babies on the ground. I used gloves and collected them, put them back in the next only to have to repeat. Then she wanted nothing to do with them but still stayed very close. I talked to her, but she would have none of that. I even fed them with an eye dropper and a gruel of fish food. Of course I knew this would not end well but I couldn't just watch. Anyway, this year I cut down all the bushes along the fence so the green monster will have less to hid in and perhaps we might get a little farther along with the mockingbird population. We also have a ferral cat issue but far worse are the lizards. The blue jays love to come into my hoya baskets. I think there must be some little bugs that they find tasty. That's a win/win. We have a purple martin condo next door. Sometimes a hawk gets a baby or two. I found one of those in my yard too. I used my pool poll to get it up to the condo and back into the safety of the nest. "I know everything" (c, Sandy Pruel's tatoo, "Golden Chain") no, really, I read too much of these articles, and I usually know ahead too, because of high end magazines etc. Complaints already began,and subway tile is going bye bye, and wood stain is back-but pretty, new wood (sorry Becky.,still taken with your different,new brass))..well nice wood is always nice, whenever if you ask me, and I have favorite wood stains that I prefer-which in darker camp would be walnut and teak, and in lighter camp, unstained cherry, maple and white oak (quarter sawn) They show quite a bit of plywood used lately-and I agree sometimes the beauty of material is being exactly what it is ,not trying to mimic anything. I'd love to have stained kitchen, and would have it under different circumstances. I also adore combo of wood plus color. I'm like that since I was 25 and saw it for the first time at some friends' house. was something made in Spain. I got hooked ever since. I have it too, just not in the kitchen. Kitchen was too small to be visually chopped too much. So the wood is floors. Of course I wanted to do butcherblock too. Didn't happen. And my tiles were supposed to be patterned but didn't happen. Well I have there plants and ceramics and whatnot so still it's a warm kitchen. The tones and colors will get richer-they already did. White already's out of big favor, but I love white anyway, when it's applied right, well I love all the colors-for me they just need to be on the warmer side, mostly. So no matter how many people will love navy and all sorts of blues-I'll admire it in other people's houses, but will keep my own blues to small quantities. Unless I find myself in a very cool teal house. Or something. I don't change whatever works, never ever-I adjust. If something beautiful and works with the house-it stays. Greige will still be in-how else folks will bridge between old and new? Most people simply can't afford it. Will be warmer greige. (thanks for that because all the listing with Tuscan tiles and cool gray walls seem so, so very sad. House looks like it's been beaten..against its will) Luckily for me because as you all know I'm a big lover of greige and taupe..they make me special calm kind of happy, they always did. I probably prefer all things a bit muddier and murkier. Though I do love scarlet, and cobalt, and emerald..but so much depends on the surface. Jewel tones beg for depth and richness. As if they were jewels. So yes, velvet..and glass..and very good paint..plants of course! ok I overexcited myself lol. Of course jewel tones are in. Again, for several years already. I love so many colors and have them all too, and the more colors one's got, the easier it is to sneak another one, so all their corals and terracottas and marigolds and greens-I have them all, and more. I do love certain pastels(pink!!), and I love red..I guess because they become me and uplift me-I color my hair red for the past ten years..and I love black and white,..and I like plants and books..and fabrics and prints..and wallpaper already is in again for years and they already say "no, actually we love wall murals better" like it can't be that person loves all of it. You can love everything-and it will whether work in your place or it won't. It's okay, one can love at a distance too. Or if to listen to them-one just has to choose between gallery wall and big art, like it's impossible to like every art in many forms..or one has to choose which plant to love-fig tree out, succulents out, some pampas grass in, like pampas grass is "fresher"-no, I love plants, they're living things, our contract with them is different, and it sounds mighty stupid to me when some are "in" and others are "out"..if it grows in my house under my care it's in. Same with art-I don't buy anything that I want to get rid of. And it takes me years to collect it. As for different tiles-I'm a huge tile lover, I'm a tile junkie you might say. Tile junkies have to pay..like, a lot. So it is what it is. Can't splurge everywhere. Even my compromises were costly enough. And I like handmade tiles. And backyard hardscaping still awaits me. Will be thousands even if I severely restrict myself. It also depends on a house of course, and ours is styled Spanish Ranch, so I have this element of "noblesse oblige" when I decide on tiles. Would it be mcm-I'd choose different tiles-and have huge fun too. In short, everything that they say is now in-it's already in, and it's been in, it's just they didn't proclaim it before, and not everybody's paying close attention, or looks everywhere for inspiration, etc. Terazzo is in(thanks goodness. even though I've nowhere to apply it. brings back happy memories), and many cool things. I swear that was supposed to be a very short post..don't know what happenned. Maybe coffee. Ah. I love coffee color too. I drink mine with cream. Lots of it. So that's a happy color to me. A result of strong coffee plus lots of cream. Maybe it's tan?

Wait, can you even buy a washer with an agitator these days? The washers I'm looking at, based on my refinements, don't have agitators. The one agi-less washer I had (for about a week) made a twisted mess of my clothes. Is that no longer an issue?

LOL!! Hey, I hear coffee is VERY good down there. :D

Timing is everything. DFIL is paying for the whole family to go on a Caribbean cruise, and they're leaving on the 28th. No, I'll be staying behind to man the fort (still having ear/dizziness issues, and I don't want a ship doc to have to tend to me :D), but the gang is going to be visiting Antigua/Barbuda, St. Lucia, Grenada, Martinique, & St. Thomas.

I did a bunch of research online for places to see while they're docked, but personal experiences are even better. They'll be back on the 9nd of Feb. or thereabouts, so if you can wait, Sarah, I'll make sure DH takes notes on the best places to explore. :) I know they're not going to pre-book any excursions, because there are plenty of cheaper ways to see the islands, and that's what they're after.

I'm most bummed out about not being able to visit St. Lucia's tropical islands rainforest. THAT sounds like something to see!

THINK DOMINICA!

I think I posted this travelogue-ish thing here before...

We were only on Dominica for about a year but even if we had been there a lifetime, I do not think we would have seen all the wondrous and beautiful sites that are the island!

Morning starts when the sun pops up over the ocean at 6:00 AM and as the morning goes on you watch over the mountains (volcanos) as the mist accumulates and clouds form and it dumps rain on you from about 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Everyday.

There are no words to describe the beauty of the rainforests. It is hot and very humid but surprisingly not oppressive to climb through the undergrowth. Perhaps the excitement and the adrenaline kicking in?

Hummingbirds abound. Everywhere. The Sisserou parrot, the nation's pride, is a majestic bird. They are THE MOST protected of Dominica's natural wonders. If one of a bonded pair of the parrots dies, the mate will cease to eat and soon will also die. The zoo there finds on occasion a lone bird mourning over a lost mate and capture it and try to feed them and get them to recover and find new mates. I saw one such male at the zoo but none in the wild.

Go to the open air market (don't stand under a coconut palm) on Saturday and take your pick of ferns (I have no clue what they were), orchids, flowering this and flowering that. Most times the seller is not aware of the identity of what was being sold. There was a Rasta we befriended and he would save "plants of curiosity" for me. (Legal.All legal!) Plants generally will cost you up to $5.00 EC. You want to but a pig's tail for soup or a cow T-bone steak all the same price per pound...$2.50 EC. That is roughly $1.00 US. Go early for your shopping (6:30 - 7:00 AM) before the flies set in and on your soon to be groceries.

Visit the old Brit. fort there and you can readily find cannon balls from early battles. Beaches near Portsmouth are black from the volcano.

Storms bring up squid, sponges, sometimes fish on the beach. Go for a walk early (5:30-ish AM) and rescue these guys and toss them back into the sea. (Do not pick up red or orange sponges with bare hands.) Look out over the ocean and you may well catch a glimpse of whales, dolphins, or sea turtles doing their thing. You may even be asked for a dance by a Coconut Crab as he waves his claw at you and does the side step left and side step right. Mountain chicken (little frog legs) is an island delicacy. So is Ting, a carbonated grapefruit juice drink. They have Coke made from cane sugar rather than corn syrup.

Delonix regia everywhere. Weedy little things. Wee seedlings sprouting like spring maple seedlings in Ohio. There is no rabies on the island. There are no poisonous snakes...but the snakes they do have are huge! So are their centipedes. I brought one back to the Ohio State University entomology dept. that was 11 inches long. (Yuck!)

The people are delightful and will go out of their way like no one else to help you or do anything for you. You step out on the balcony in the morning to be greeted by the absolutely perfect rendition of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik whistled by the neighbor as he has tea on his porch and watches the hummers at his BOP patch. You just haven't lived until you have ridden into town in the back of a pickup truck with three pigs!

Night comes at 6:00 PM. Fade to black. Mosquitoes come out then so be sure you have your mosquito netting ready. Cholera and Dengue Fever are common. When dining at a restaurant, a word to the wise, look at the bread or rolls before eating them. There are very tiny ants that quickly move into baked goods such as bread, though the pastries they make seem safer.

Electricity can be iffy at times...where ever you are. The favorite saying seems to be: The lights will go on when the generator is working. But who needs lights when you have a sky full of stars and a meteor shower every night. Oh how you wish you had the nerve to lie on the ground and just be drawn into the starscape but there are things creeping about at night: lizards, crabs, snakes, something like fire ants (or maybe they are a type of fire ant) those darn centipedes and don't even mention the spiders.

They export bananas and fresh water. Much of the water goes to Antigua. If I could I would go back to Dominican a heartbeat. Oh, if traveling there try to get your prop plane to land at the Canefield Airport. The other airport is a blind approach over the volcano and more than a little scary.

That's about it.

St. Kitts is OK ... too touristy now though.

Oh, thanks CD3, I'm putting that on the top of my places to go! I'd rather do that than sit at a pool bar on an overcrowded hotel row anyday! However, at the moment I don't have a travel partner ready to do 11" centipedes. Me, as long as they're not in my bed I'm ok with 'em. (Gulp!)

Come to think of it, there are many people here that I would rather travel with than some of my close friends (the one that doesn't want to walk anywhere, and the one that sat in the RV and watched TV instead of out in the sun on the shore of Lake Superior looking out at the Apostle Islands to name 2). Though I still love to travel with my Mom, she'll do most anything!

LOL! Yeah, DH keeps going on, rain forest this, rain forest that...until I said, "Watch out for those tropical snakes, hon." *crickets* I'll save the centipede thing for Sunday at the airport. Hehe.

I totally agree with you about travel companions, Sarah! When my mom and I get together, we have tons of laughing-til-you-cry episodes. With the darling in-laws (crazy Irish, anyway), we get a lot of raised voices and drama. It doesn't help that 90% of them have some sort of hyperactivity disorder. LOL

Ooh, spending a hard earned week off with a hyperactive personality isn't something I'd relish Brenda, but I love to travel with Mom, and I don't mind ocassional drama as long as it's fun. Besides, then Dad will sit most of the dogs! As one of my dear friends said "I want options. If I want to sit by the pool and read or not, or shop, or sit on the beach, or eat in, or eat out or not, or shop, or sight see, or sit by the pool and read, or sit on the ocean and read, or shop or not...I want to do what I want to do while I'm on vacation". Seems one should choose their travel companions with the same philosopy and their vacation would be ideal, or not:)

It's time to think Mexico again...
