NY Times Opinion piece re: kitchen trends
Comments (12)The apartments in question are 8 figures. That is $10M. The kitchen they are talking about is larger than many peoples entire apartments in Manhattan. (I know a couple whose bedroom was 6 x 13. A full sized bed did not really fit so the bed was in the LR.) The idea of an open kitchen like this is still unusual in NY, even loft spaces tend to have smallish kitchens. As for the appearance of the kitchen, in its context, its fine: it would not look particularly good in a colonial revival in Iowa, but neither would a country kitchen look particularly appropriate in a semi sky scraper. There is a skyscraper in my city (1980s post mod deco) that had the upper storeys--40th floor and up--converted to condos in the 7-8 figure price range and I am sorry but the apt. tricked out with the traditional kitchen when the LR wall was all glass and 500 feet up looked ridiculous. That particular style of cabinetry was introduced about 1960 by Seimatic and some form of it has been in production since then. Thats fifty years, the look is semi-antique. So it has a market segment, just a very particular market segment. Its hardly sterile, its just minimal and most people are maximalists....See More2019 baseboard trends master bedroom
Comments (9)Just want to add to the idea trim out is expensive and change gets you no more money just because it is 'on trend'. Sister added on to her home sun room and redid kitchen. Dumped the DARK stained oak for maple. Because the trim USUALLY matches the cabinetry they did a complete re-trim of their home at the same time. 20 years later she attempted to sell the house. She got no where near what the trim out cost in the resale. The matching got her nowhere financially. I bet there are very few who even notice baseboard trim out unless you are talking an historic home where the baseboards were quite a feature....See MoreFebruary 2019, Week 2, Planting Time Is So Close....And, Yet, So Far
Comments (60)Kim, Prayers for fast healing for you. Bon, Where would we be without our beloved OK Mesonet? It has all the most helpful info in so many different formats. I just love it. I'm glad Bill made it home in time to chop wood. Hopefully that wood will keep the stove fed and keep you all toasty warm. Maybe you coulda/woulda/shoulda been chopping wood, but we know that it wouldn't feed your soul the way that gardening does, so we totally get it. Your wind chill was bad and it was bad so much earlier than ours. The cold front didn't make it this far south until tonight, but we're plenty chilly now. Megan, If you need some time to just chill, then allow yourself to do that. I think when our bodies are telling us what it needs, we need to listen. With a three day weekend, you should have adequate time for chilling and seed starting. Enjoy your holiday weekend. dbarron, Maybe the cat and dog were just playing and neither is too much of a fraidy cat? I'm glad you got the car into the garage so you won't have to chisel ice off the windshield later. The plants don't seem as bothered by the cold as we do. I guess that's because they are out in it 24/7 and are somewhat better adapted to it perhaps. Rebecca, I hope the procedure went well and that you and your mom made it home just fine. Y'all, the models look like somebody is going to get some snow next week, but I do not necessarily think it will hit many of us unless something changes. We have an unexpected, last-minute bonus weekend with the older granddaughter this week as her dad is unavailable for his weekend with her. Well, his loss is our gain and we're going to enjoy having her here with us, though she might climb the walls a little bit without her little sis around to play with. Of course, we can do things we don't do when little sis is here, like maybe go to a more mature movie (something not G-rated) or to a restaurant that little sis doesn't like. Tomorrow will be just her day and she's already voiced her opinion on where we should eat lunch. : ) Before they called to see if she could come stay with us, I had thought I might do a little plant shopping or something tomorrow but I think instead we'll do something she'll enjoy. It still is pretty chilly to be buying plants, especially since the cold weather doesn't want to go away. I'm ready to do some gardening, but the weather isn't really right for it yet, especially with the persistently soggy soil. Comments (17)mtrot I don’t know the answer. I try to ask. When I go to private appliance stores I have pulled out my cell phone to look up the model number and it’s reviews and they (salesmen) are insulted. To dig deep you have to know the serial number as well. You look at the serial number on the compressor because if you were to replace the compressor or if the company were to replace the compressor the serial number would change. There are other refrigerators that have bad compressors too. Somewhere on here or on HOUZZ, never sure where I am, there is a large group that talks about refrigerators and you get on there some appliance people who repair refrigerators and they will tell you. Some owners have the ability to fix them. The biggest problem is water. Ice cubes flying out; water not going into the cup. That doesn’t seem to change but I do look to see how old the reviews are. It’s difficult because when you get a review from someone who just bought theirs in 2018 or 2019 and they say oh it’s just beautiful and we like it then that’s not helpful either because they have not witnessed the oncoming problems. There are no reviews that say that we have had it for 10 years and nothing has happened. I think the countries that make these appliances hate America. The site with lots of participation has one title which is “I know I shouldn’t have done it but I bought a Samsung refrigerator and I regret it .” That woman was a great spokes person because we were all together and I was watching each other‘s posts and she had just bought it and we were concerned. Then she wrote back and said that. Samsung is so expensive and looks good but is full of troubles including trying to find someone who will repair it. The Samsung office is rude is not helpful. I have made another rule for myself. If a refrigerator is on sale then I shouldn’t buy it or consider it. If word gets out that there is a very good refrigerator that will never go on sale. It’s like when I bought a speed queen dryer. You could not find one that was made in 2017 that had very good reviews. I ended up finding one that I thought was made in 2018. Brand new configuration. What I really had was one made in 2016....See MoreHolly Stockley
