Yes pink flowers would be fabulous! I love pink. But I like the hazy clouds of white flowers too. Campanula, this is definitely a weedy species, and makes abundant seedlings. Although the Chocolate plants bloom a bit later than the plain green species, I think the two are cross-pollinating some in the back yard. The offspring of the Chocolate plants (those seedlings showing up closer to the mother plants) all show some purple color, but usually not as much as the cultivar itself. Farther back, the green species seedlings are spreading like crazy. They are very drought and shade tolerant - also critter proof as nothing eats them. I've got them mixed with other fairly aggressive eastern US woodland natives like Helianthus divaricatus and Aster cordifolius and sorta let them have a free for all.

They may be armyworms. Im not sure if the plant will bloom if left or not, but I would try to remove them, maybe soap or water, hands. Im not sure how to remove them though. Its not really a moth to raise.

I have a few short Joe Pye's too (can't remember which one) and have never had BFs on them that I know of...they are nice for late season bloom, though... I wonder if you need a whole small field of Joe Pye to catch the interest of the butterflies...? I planted the white eupatorium (although I think they've changed the names on these again) and I haven't seen BFs on that either. And I have lots of that growing around here.

I did winter sow mine and it did very well. Just like the others said, the plants have remained relatively small for me and haven't increased in size much over the 2 or 3 years since I've planted them. It's planted against a south facing wall, which in my dry Mediterranean climate means quite hot in Summer, but it has some shade from a nearby tree. It does get watered via the automatic watering system. It wouldn't survive otherwise in my climate, I believe. I have saved seeds and this year I tried some direct sowing around the base of the existing two clumps. I don't think anything is coming out, though. The seeds are very aerodynamic and are easily blown by the wind, so I think the winter sowing method does better. The only negative I have for this plant in my climate is that it is very late to emerge in Spring and then dies back to the ground in Fall, leaving me with an empty spot for months on end. In a climate without snow cover, such as mine, this is a minus. Of course, in a climate with snow cover it's perfect. Other than that, it's a carefree and interesting (rather than beautiful) plant.
