Can't say that I have made fish emulsion. Can't say I can think of anyway to not attract critters if they are present in the area because fish stink to high heaven.

Usually, if you have a fairly large compost pile tossing some meat into the middle every now and then doesn't cause much issue, but if you had quantities of fish parts all over I think that would be different.

I think the indians had the right idea with burying the fish in a hole with a plant and being done with it ;-)

Certainly more than I would ever need for a growing season's worth of emulsions. So, how to bury? How deep, etc?

Not sure there is any science to it. As far as I recall the 'story' I heard was that the fish was put in the bottom of the planting hole or trench or whatever and then the plant/seed was placed above it.

Probably would work just as well an inch under the ground next to a plant if not for the increased critter risk.

Never tried it though.

I had a place once with a landlord who was a fisher and ran a fish shop - a couple years I got garbage cans full of heads, tails and guts from him, trenched across the garden with the hiller attachment of a Troy-bilt tiller, poured the slop in the trenches, pushed the hills back to re-level the garden and planted - never had better crops than the years I did that, and when tilled the following spring there was no evidence of fish left

Read a post here where someone planted a fish with each corn stalk. Woke up to a field of neat holes.

To compost fish, squirrels, woodchucks, deer carcases (after butchering), annoying neighbors, etc- get a compost pile going fairly hot, then just dig a hole in the middle and bury the stuff. In a really hot pile, the fish scraps will be gone in a matter of days. If really worried about the smell- throw some extra shredded and moistened leaves on top.

Seems that buried in a truly hot pile- not even the nasty smells escape the composting process. Dig into a pocket of fish scraps- they'll stink. The pile, however, filters that out, and the whole thing balances. I've composted fish scraps, lobster shells, steamah shells, etc with no smell.

I recently gathered seaweed and soaked it in water to make seaweed/kelp tea. Made a goopy liquid in 12 hours that needed to be diluted. I dunno if it's done miraculous things in my yard or not, as stuff was in good shape and I didn't run a control. If we're talking ocean fishing- then that's a possible as well.

I guess I just got lucky, my son inlaw came by a barrel with about 200 lbs of fish emulsion, the powderd kind and put it in my garden. I have been useing it on my vegs. but have be careful as it is so much nitrogen it will burn the plant if I use too much. Used right and the plants really get up and go.
