I bought a discounted Mokara

Hi, just wanna check with the experts here if growing conditions for Mokara orchids are the same as Vandas?

It came in a pot of bark and has no flowers. The plant looks healthy - has leaves growing and some aerial roots sprouting with dark tips.

I read that Vandas can tolerate high heat and the strong direct sun. Is this the same for Mokara?

I'm over here at Singapore where daytime temp climbs to 33ÃÂ°C currently then dips to 27/28ÃÂ°C during the night.

Mokara is a man made Genera with parents from the following Genera..... Arachnis ÃÂ Ascocentrum ÃÂ Vanda
and one of the keys to growing them is to look at the leaves.
Terete Leaves. Round and hard looking indicate high light tolerance.
Strap leaves indicate less light tolerance
How much shade do you need in Singapore at noon? No idea because the only time i've been there was in the transit lounge at the airport. But here latitude 33S, only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun.

So the shade-house which gets all day sun all year has two layers of 50% shade cloth cover nearly all year and I might take one layer off in winter.

Not much help really because I do not know what the screening effect is of very high humidity.

Maybe if you describe your growing conditions in a bit of detail someone will be able to give better help.

Callas don't go dormant in summer for me, mine are just now coming up. As you said, water & fertilize & they will grow nicely for next year. Mine are just now coming up & don't bloom for another month or so, but hold their blooms for most of the summer. At least until the seed pods get so heavy that the flower folds over. They hold the flower color pretty much til fall, but you can't see it sitting on the ground unless it is propped up. Some of the colors grow better than others. I bought an orange variety & the deep purple about 3 years ago. They come back every year, but have not bloomed. You are a zone warmer so you may not have that problem. I love the ones with variegated foliage especially.

I don't know how many of you have ever seen those charts that show the musical range of all the instruments of the orchestra. Most instruments have about a three octave range. Some like oboes and trumpets have less, just over two octaves. The human voice has about a three octave range, opera singers may have four. The piano has seven and the pipe organ can have ten! The Vanda is the pipe organ of the orchid world when it comes to temperature range. In one of those beginners books that we like to recommend here, I can't remember if its the Sunset or the Ortho is a chart just like the musical instrument chart of ten or fifteen orchid families and their temperature ranges. Some odont families can tolerate temps down in the 40's but are croaking at 75. Other like phals and some species dends can deal with temps in excess of 100F but don't really want to see anything less than 65. Well in that book the line for Vanda runs from 40F clear through 110F. A wider range than any other orchid family. They might be cheating a bit by ignoring the fact that some species of Vanda clearly favor the cooler end of the range and would not be happy at 100F let alone survive it but in this day of extensive hybridization it is unlikely that you can even purchase a vandaceous orchid that you could kill by providing a temperature that you yourself could survive (naked). It isn't the temps its the light levels that do us in in trying to keep these plants. H

Half my garden is made up of markdowns! Probably more than half. I never buy something that is all dead on top, though. Like , you get a feel for things. Just accept the fact that some wonÃ¯Â¿Â½t make it. The nursery bed is a great idea. Gives them a chance to at least get out of being rootbound. I have one, it's my former vegetable garden, which is now too shady for tomatoes. Still gets too much sun for an ideal nursery, though. If I run out of time in the fall, though, that's where things go. I drove through Dubuque yesterday, back to Chicago. There is a gigantic Menard's there where I always stop for a rest break (yeah, right...). They have the biggest big box nursery I've ever seen. Completely different selection than in my area. So of course, some marked down perennials came home with me. Missing tags, out of bloom: who cares? I scored 3 Bridal Veil astilbe (that did have tags), an unknown white/pale pink Gaura, Minarrete Lupine, Powis Castle Artemisia, and my real prize, a white balloon flower. All beat up, past blooming, or dry, but healthy enough to take a risk on. Not buggy or diseased. I have no idea where these guys are going. To me, the thrill of a deal is worth it.

have you checked with the Singapore Bo gardens??
Had friends who visited there and the pix were fantastic Inspired me to attempt a Vanda hedge .lol Though fear I don't have the necessary climate.
Would certainly be a good local source of info for you??? Mokaras are fantastic!!! gary
