Toro running like it's running out of gas - sporadically
Comments (23)I had a little surprise today - I was using the now 21 yr old Lawn Boy 10684 with Tecumseh 195 and it suddenly started acting like it was running out of gas. I had just finished yesterday washing it, changing oil, changing blade and air filter and cleaning/greasing the rear drive. I used it for an hour before it started sputtering, and there was gas in it. So, I did the old float bowl orifice bolt cleaning but it was perfectly clean - no carbon, no discoloration, just a beautiful brass bolt that looked new. I went to my special/small tools drawer and found the wire tie that had been in there for many years and rodded out the tiny orifice even though it seemed to be clean. I put it back together and sure enough, it immediately started and ran great. I've been running Premium gas with Startron in it for years but perhaps a tiny piece of something managed to get into the small orifice. BTW, when you go to do this orifice cleaning, stand the mower up on its wheels just like you're going to dump the oil. Fuel in the float bowl runs back to the tank. Typically when you remove the bolt, the float bowl stays put - just watch out for the washer under the orifice bolt head....See Moregas cans and mowers
Comments (13)to Orygun ui laughed at your comments put gas in the crankshaft????? great goodness...how did you come up wiuth that? the spout that came with the can is the one i couldnot figure out how to get the gas out of (may my english teach forgive me)...so bought a new spout - that didn't fit. did not think of taking the gas can with full head of gas into home depot to check that problem out. tyo all the others, i quickly bought a BIG funnel and will use that in the future. no doubt the lawyers/lawmakers are putting their kids thro college with the money reaped from their handiwork...and my degree is worthless in today's cumbersome world thanks every one but orygan...See MoreSta-bil to treat ethanol gas?
Comments (6)FWIW, I once emailed Stabil and asked them that question, they said the regular stabil would offset ethanol. Personally, when I empty a gas can I add the stabil so when I fill it, I'm ready to go. Considering the relatively small amount of Stabil or equivalent you'll use in a season for small engines, it's cheap insurance. Also follow Bill's advice on keeping tanks topped off. Also, I always run small engines dry at the end of the season, been doing that for years, even before "mystery gas" appeared. If you do a search here on GW you'll find as many opinions on ethanol as there are posters. You'll also find definitive info on what ethanol does to small engines by those more knowledgable than I am. good luck, Ev...See MoreUse of Sta-Bil and/or Seafoam gas stabilizers/cleaners
Comments (23)When I worked as a mechanic at a Buick dealership, some of the old mechanics would pour water down the carburetor VERY SLOWLY. The water turns to steam and the shock knocks off the carbon. When the old ladies would bring in those beautiful Buick Electras and Riverias because they idled rough, the Service Manager would take the car out on the freeway and really get after it. I went with him once and you could actually hear the carbon particles tinkling out the exhaust pipes. He would ask if they were burning Ethel as recommended in those 11:1 high compression engines. The customers jaw would jut out and they would say they will only burn regular. Idiots. I think adding transmission fluid to your gas would only carbon up your engine even more, if it did anything. Sorry off topic. I use Stabil and fill the gas tank to the top to prevent condensation from forming when I park my GT for the winter. (I empty my weedwacker, leaf blower and chain saw whenever they won't be used for several weeks.) Six months later the GT starts right up. I don't have any experience with SEaFoam....See Moreitzbinnice
