anything i should do with my new orchids?

I just got two new orchids in the mail, one epidendum psuedepidendrum seedling and another rhyncholaelia digbyana. is there anything special i should do, or just take care of them normally. sorry if this is a sortof "newbie" question, but i want my new orchids to be happy! TIA

The problem with your question is that readers do not know what growing conditions you have. Glasshouse, windowsill, under lights? temperatures and where in the United States.

Rhyncholaelia digbyana. is a high light orchid that might be difficult to flower in some growing conditions.

Whatever you do, isolate them from the rest of your plants until you are sure they are bug, virus, and fungus free.

You might consider giving them a spray of Safer's or Bayer Advanced, just to be on the safe side.

I don't know if this is of any help, but I sterilize all my clippers in a can or jar of alcohol, between each cut... I keep a large open-mouth jar full of alcohol, in a pail, with my clippers, and dip the clippers between each cut...and put the cover back on the jar of alcohol when I'm done.... I have a large rose-bed and learned to do this the hard way--- several years ago I would just do my pruning with the same clippers, no sterilizing-- until I was hit with canker and it spread like wild-fire, it is spread by cutting, wounds to the cane, cross-canes that scrape each other--etc.also the weather contributes, cool and rainy and overcast... and I lost a lot of my roses--- it was just the straw so to speak that woke me up to my carelessness, an expensive lesson! So now I keep a pail for the roses, and another pail for the orchids, both with the jar of alcohol and their own clippers... and have not had any problems since.... works for me, LOL, sally

Missha, this is the place where people post photos of their you-beaut orchids. You will get better response if you post on the Discussions page. What is wrong with the flowers? Perhaps nothing, they might be dying of old age. How long have they been in-bloom. Where are you in the USA. Is this your first Orchid? How long have you owned orchid? Temperatures? Sunlight. Anyway, repost with more information or add to one of the existing Problem Phal. posts to get help.

YES! Do not let any alcohol touch it, mouthwash, perfume, etc. Glass trays are nice to set things on to prevent rings. If you are using the space very hard and hurried, you may want to consult a marble expert for advise about a stronger sealer. Your discription sounds so beautiful, peach is my favorite but I haven't found much, more pink everywhere. Mine is white crystaline with pale grey, peach and coffee with cream grains. It is soft and I must be very careful but do not mind at all, for the beauty! Do you have a photo to share?

Nothing on the hind end but tearout and redo. All the work was on the front end in product and labor selection. Better hope he knows how to properly waterproof a shower. orchid126: thanks for the advice, however i didn't get it soon enough as the first thing I did once the new ones arrived was to put them with the rest of my plants.

arthrum: i'm in CA. I'm growing all of my orchids in a relatively sunny south facing window with no additional lighting. if there isn't enough light for the r. digbyana, i could add growing lights, i guess.

If you're in Southern Ca, that digy would be better off outdoors in a nice bright spot. Start with early morning sunshine, eventually letting it get sunshine into the early afternoon. That's a tough plant. Don't overwater it, give it lots of bright light and it will reward you with wonderful, fragrant blooms! Good luck.
