Help ID shrub w/ redberries

seashoresylvia

Hello all, I have lived in the same house in NE Alabama for over 50 yrs. I brought a small shrub from my grandmother's house in the same area that she referred to it as a "mayberry bush". My shrub is now very large (over 12 ft. tall and very full). Each spring around May it bears tons of small edible red berries, each hanging from a stem like a cherry and each has a small pit. They taste bitter and the skin is very pourous and almost gritty. Birds and squirrels love them! I have searched the term "mayberry" and it doesn't appear to be that. Both myself, family, and many passer-by's want to know what it is. Please Help! Thanks much.
