Is there a testing procedure for coil packs other than the old "check for spark" method? i know on cars you can check resistance across certain terminals and compare readings to specified values.

A Mercotronic tester, if anyone still has one, will check breaker ignition coils. If solid state, unplug the kill switch wire and check spark with a reliable tester, not a plug pressed against the engine. They are usually go or no go.

I'll assume that you have an F series engine on your Lawnboy. If so, there are quite a few different part numbers that cover the same coils. The main difference is if you have a newer "zone start" or older model with the ignition switch mounted on the cowl. The difference between these two ignition switches is that one has to be connected to ground to run and the other has to be disconnected from ground to run. The "open to run" coil will work in either style mower, it's just that the ignition switch on the older style will be backwards (off will be on and on will kill the engine). You can't get a zone start to work properly with the "ground to run" coil. If your mower is running with the new coil, you are in good shape.

sfhellwig: No Problem Dude ! I can see that you are apparently getting the run around by your local Repair Facilities and are feeling the frustration. Since you are the Originator of this Thread no foul in expanding the Coil Trouble Shooting Criteria lol . I hate when Threads are Hijacked . If you follow what Baymee has advised for Safety (Bail & Torquing Specs) You should not damage the Bonded Brake Liner or Damage the Flywheel by over-tightening . If you do not have a Torque wrench use a normal 3/4" drive ratchet with 3/4" till snug unless you are a Gorilla no foul . If you feel a Small brass hammer is to evasive utilize a Fibre (Plastic) face mallet . Follow my or Tomplums advice and you will have the Flywheel of asap without incident ! I have removed two lawnmower and 3 Chainsaw Flywheels in the last month and only used 3 finger puller on the one chainsaw which was 40 yrs old it req'd the penetrating oil overnight soak since it was galled on pretty bad . Patience and gentle tapping & prying allowed removal without any thread damage . Hey don't fret $30-$60 I have seen some Coil / ignition modules go for $130+ . Sad that your Repair Agent is such a deadbeat , I have picked up used dealer units for a third of original price which outlasted the Original Mowers lol . Oh, i wanted to add, I was reassembling my 10201 yesterday with the cables I got from echoman. Cleaned it all meticulously and put it back together.. no spark Remembering a thread from here, I took the coil off and heated up the legs with my propane torch for a few mins on each leg. The potting compound was bubbling a bit, steam escaping, etc. I let it get hot and put it back on my mower. Fired up second pull!. I now have a strong spark and its working great. So glad someone shared that tip.... Aside from a few scuff marks on the side, the mower looks pretty good. Hard to believe I found it upside down with the handlebars disconnected and lying a few feet from it at the local recycle yard. Guess they pitched it when it stopped sparking. I had to soak the carb in gas and then brush it all down with an old toothbrush. I then went completely through it and cleaned everything, all orifices, etc. Normal R & R for neglect.

Go to Ace hardware and get some "plyobond" I hope I spelled it correct. You will also have numerous other uses for it around the garage also. It stays flexible and is gas and all the other bad stuff resistant. I doubt the backfire is caused by the coil though. Try the air adjust screw or the float may be going bad. Reed plate may need replaced also. Is the coil gapped at the proper gap? Is the flywheel key intact and not sheared a bit? Check and get the backfire under control.

On Lawn boy coils (the old beige style) on the F engines ,there is no test method....,BUT they require a ground to spark,this is a "Closed loop system".....if you disconnect the ground wire ,no spark will be present(to be sure it has a good ground run a jumper from the coil tab to a good engine ground,this takes the safety switches out of the loop.)....the opposite is true for the dark grey/black coils....

If in doubt about the coil, replace it on these mowers. Even if it fires, it still might not be good. These mowers had lots of coil troubles, even when they were relatively new. With a weak coil the mower will start hard. With a bad coil it will never start. I sold these mower for several years and have well learned the coil story.

A friend has an ignition testor that will check the LB coils. I have used it different times and it is accurate, sorry, I have posted the make here but have now forgotten what it is.

Can a new Duraforce coil be tested too. From what I read, these fail often, although mine are holding out so far. But they are pricey.

ALL LB CDI units have an unreasonable high failure rate. I don't believe I have ever tried testing a DuroForce CDI.
