Should I Open Now Budding Once Dry Sheathes?

Christine

I've had some cattleyas for many years that have never bloomed although they've grown huge in that time. My husband rigged up supplemental lighting and late last year the unbloomed plants put out some empty sheaths that dried and turned brown/black. I left them on and when watering the plants yesterday felt lumps in the sheaths. I peeked inside the top of one and saw frilly buds. Yay - finally flowers-to-be!

Should I remove the sheaths, open them to help the buds come out, or just leave them alone? I don't want to do anything to kill the flowers at this point!
