I think in many cases, rituals have little or nothing to do with dogma; rituals are a psychological structure-via-motion and are often a comfort in and of themselves. Many "safe" repetitive series of motions 'feel' comforting and that sense of security induces an urge to repeat the series. This has little to do with 'belief' which is a summation of one's experience and contemplation, which may or may not be of an 'uplifting' or moral nature.

Fittingly I grabbed on my way out of the door yesterday "A Joy of Gardening" by V. Sackville-West to re-read at the hospital. Husband fell again, could not get him up and EMS brought him to the hospital, since they suspected a stroke. He has to stay over the weekend for observation and I just got back for a couple of hours of sleep. So everybody have a good weekend and you Southerners stay out of harms way during the coming storm.

The brain is really on 2 cylinders today! :o) This quote is like something that comes in the night---it also reminds me of a time when I was in the hospital with viral meningitis some years back. The pain was so bad in my head I begged to die...moaning for days, screaming if someone forgot and turned on the big light, having all kinds of hallucinations----if there is a Hell you can visit and come back from, I was there, and your quote nailed it.
