Should it stay or should it go?

This plant seems to have popped up overnight.

We moved in about a year ago so we are still figuring out which are weeds and which are keepers.

This plant is about a foot tall, multi-stemmed. The leaves are very delicate (not firm) and light green and are slightly fuzzy or downy. No flowers or buds so far.

Could it be a volunteer? I found something that looked similar growing in the lawn, bit just one stem.

I live in 6b outside DC.

Looks like one of the loniceras, honeysuckle, to me.

Yes, one of the shrub honeysuckles like Lonicera maackii, L. morrowii, etc. Not a vine like japanese honeysuckle. A very invasive plant in the mid-Atlantic area.

Oh good. I love purple and b&w too. Not sure how dark you are considering, but I once painted my 15x9 office a medium-dark purple (inspired by a magazine photo of an elegant dining room). As I was painting around the narrow end of the room the walls began to feel like they were moving in on m It was horrible! So back to the paint store for a lavender that hinted at periwinkle. So one option is lavender paint on top and dark purple rugs. FWIW, Kelly Moore lets you order 8x10 color samples, but you need to get the special form to fax in and then they mail them to you. I wonder if other companies do that too. ??? Good luck. Can't wait to see it.

The nursery industry has already responded to concerns about size and seeds with multiple different dwarf and (supposedly) sterile forms or hybrids of Buddleja davidii. Just one wholesale grower alone offers at least several (along with some older, conventional varieties): https://plants.monrovia.com/search?w=buddleja A late friend that was surprised about how much he had to water his Seattle garden after moving here and buying a property went back to Chicago one August to visit relatives. Where he learned that they had had one inch per week of rain since May that season. Out here an entire July may pass by without an inch of rain having occurred. Except for certain outer coastal zones summer rain is not a significant factor on the Pacific Slope, with the Lower 48 consisting basically of a dry summer western half and a rainy summer eastern half - the annual precipitation curves of the two corners (Seattle and Miami) are exactly opposite one another. The talk about how rainy it is here is not based on summer conditions, with there having been a bumper sticker around in the past that read Seattle Rain Festival - November to May. We never get the copious summer downpours of the eastern states, where in the South in particular it may rain feet at a time. So, yes: if a plant like butterfly bush is a noxious weed here in the Pacific Northwest this is not due to the presence of ample summer rainfall.

I have that Persicaria around my yard, it is a weedy plant, but yours appears to be a selected variety with those markings on the leaves. I've seen that one discussed on here before. Its an attractive plant if you can tolerate removing the seedlings. I also planted 2 of those Viburnums on purpose. Nice plants for a more naturalized area.

If they are above a graft line AND you want your plant to fill out more as a shrub, then leave them. If you prefer the limbed-up tree look, then remove them. But as long as they are above the graft. they will still produce good fruit eventually. Is this plant in the ground or in a container? If container, I'd leave them. But ultimately it's an aesthetic decision.

I looked it up and on one website it said that bush honeysuckle leaves are opposite in pairs.

This plant has three leaves, then a stem coming up from the middle and then three more. The newer leaves are very soft and downy and pale green. One side of the stem has a reddish tinge.

No, it is not poison ivy! (She prays).

Do you think it could still be a shrub honeysuckle?

Yes! you are right that some have just the pairs of (two) opposite leaves, but some also have this set of three, such as in the link below.

Can it still be honeysuckle it it has these sets of three?

I would vote for L. japonica although I went out to my fence and was unsuccessful trying to find an instance of 3 leaves. What I did find was a lot of variability. These photos all came from chunks I ripped from the same vine.
1 2 3 4 5 In pic 3, you can see the radically different leaves from 2 adjacent nodes.

(And no, I'm not growing this stuff on purpose, 4 neighbors bordering me leave their side of the fence "natural" and it just visits me.)

Thanks purpleinopp. It is interesting there is so much variability in the leaves. Sneaky devil.

So I will be pulling it out this weekend.
