Comments (12)onecrazymom (nice name, BTW ;-), Cucumbers do not require very much root space at all. The thing to understand about most gardeners is they base what they say from 'feel' and maybe an 'authoritative' source or two who base what they say off 'feel'. You can grow a cucumber plant in a tiny root space given ample water and nutrients. The Square Foot Fardening method calls for giving them a 6" wide, 6" deep and 12" long area and to feed them only compost (in a raised bed, not container). It works. Over the years I have learned to ignore people's notions of how large a space a plant's roots supposedly need. Just grow what you want and feed, water it appropriately and ignore root space for the most part. If we container gardener's didn't ignore root space issues we wouldn't be growing in containers!...See Moremiracle grow organic??
Comments (24)Many people can get really worked up about "organic". Make your own decision and stick to it. The old fashion Miracle grow is not "organic". If your Mother-in-law were to sneak over and feed your tomatoes with it, your children are not going to die from it. If used responsibly, it isn't dangerous. It won't ruin your soil after just one use and the world is not going to end. That said, if she does do a sneak attack, you can no longer claim your garden is "pure organic". Long term use of such things without providing plenty of organic matter and "food" for your microbes and worms, will spell disaster for you soil in the long run. Also long term use of chemical fertilizers tends to build up some salts in the soil that need to be flushed out or they tend to burn things and kill off worms and microbes that support healthy soil. Anyway, each of us must decide what "organic" means to us and choose our battles. To some people, it is a crusade to other's it just means not using roundup or spraying pesticides. To me, it just means dumping tons of organic matter all over my yard!!!!!! Here is a link that might be useful: My Garden...See MoreMiracle Grow Organic Garden Soil
Comments (5)Buying organic soil seems counter-intuitive to me. I can't imagine many people here who take the time to make their own compost and so on buying the stuff. Have you read the thread about Miracle Grow suing a small company that sells organic compost tea? I wouldn't buy their products ever. You could ask in the Organic forum. Sorry that I can't be more helpful, I don't buy soil or compost or anything like that, I make my own. Marcia...See MoreWorms from organic miracle grow?
Comments (2)Don't assume that all things creepy-crawly are bad -- many are good guys :) I have no idea about your worms but true worms are generally beneficial and will help your soil. If you can post a picture, that would help, or take some to your local garden center (not a box store, but a locally-owned garden center with knowledgeable and experienced people), or contact the local master gardeners program/cooperative extension service. Good luck!...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
