White-flowered mystery vine?

Hello all,

I have here a small flowering vine. The leaves are about 2" (50mm) long; the unscented 1" (25mm) flowers are papery white with five translucent petals and tiny yellow centers. (At first glance I thought it might be a clematis, but as far as I can tell, they have an even number of petals.)

The plant seems to be a not-very-vigorous climber; the leaves at the growing ends kind of hook around nearby stems (it doesn't have tendrils, and it's currently tied to a couple of stakes).

I kinda hate it-- it's a bit spindly and messy. But perhaps it's not looking its best. I'm a soft-hearted gardener so basically, I'm looking for a reason NOT to dig it up. If there's something I can do to help it bush out and flower more, or it's a bee attractor or something, I'm willing to let it stay.

Any ideas?

If it helps, I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, and the plant is growing in poor soil on a somewhat dry slope with afternoon sun.

Thanks in advance!
