Mosquito repellent plant

Does anyone know what a Garden-web plant is. I heard that they're a very effective mosquito repellent plant,but I can't find anyone that knows about it.If anyone does know can you post or send me a Picture

I don't know of a plant by that common name, and neither does Google. I understand that there are some plants that are decent mosquito repellents, but most that are mentioned are from research that says their *components* can be used to make repellents. I don't know if just planting the plants around the patio will do much.

One example: Catnip. Research says that the 'essential oils' from catnip are excellent mosquito repellents. We might end up with really good bug sprays from this research. But on the web, there are many mentions of catnip as something to plant to repel mosquitoes.... Don't think this would be of much use.

If anyone *does* know of plants that can be grown around a seating area that will even *reduce* the number of mosquitoes bothering the people sitting there, I would really love to know of it....

There's a citronella smelling Scented Geranium that they sell as a Mosquito repellant plant. Doesn't sound like it works, though.

Yes it does I can confirm that. I planted geraniums and all kind of herbs on my balcony for the last two years and the mosquitos did not eat or bite me up as it happen before. Geraniums are great for this purpose. Plant as many you can around the area you will be sitting in the summer along with lemon balm, mint, thyme and oregano even lemon grass if you're able to grow it. I have not found the seeds around here. Good Luck

I had to check out that post on the mid atlantic forum - it was about deer devastation and made me really glad I live in town. There used to be one for coastal communities, but it was pretty inactive - not sure if it's even still in existence. Now I just visit trees, shrubs, perennials, and of course our dear old NE forums. The landscape design forum is fun, too, but those guys can get a little cranky, especially when people are asking for a free design and/or when newbies post "mock ups" with all sorts of plants "scaled to fit." The crankiness gets to you eventually, so I stopped even lurking there.

That is the falacy. The plant that is commercially hyped as The Citronella Plant is nothing but one of the many scented geraniums. Because it SMELLS like citronella (which is a real plant not commonly grown), some very foxy marketers decided to take advantage of it. Mosquitoes are not repelled by the lemony smell of citronella, but the actual Cymbopogon nardus grass chemicals.

As for plants, Taste for Life magazine (available at health food stores and online at tasteforlife.com) has an article in the May 2007 issue about 2007 Herb of the Year: Lemon Balm. This herb has many, many uses, including repelling mosquitoes. Leaves rubbed on the skin will prevnt mosquitoes. Also--not a plant but apparently non-oxic an effective mosquito repellent is now on the market (read about it in Real Simple magazine--June 2007, page 68) called Don't Bug Me (www.dontbugmepatch.com): "Vitamin B1 and aloe are released through the pores to deter bugs. It's non-toxic and waterproof, so there's no need to reapply after a dip." Testemonials on website sound convincing. I will be ordering a crate myself....

There is an Australian native shrub, Leptospermum liversidgei which was recently marketed as "Mozzie Blocker'. I don't even know if it is available in the USA. It releases a citronella fragrance which supposedly repels mosquitoes. I have no idea if it really works and I would imagine if it does, that any lemon scented plant would be equally effective.
