Name That Plant!

Astilbe or bleeding heart or something else?

I blew some leaves in a shady area where, years ago, I had planted some astilbe or bleeding heart bare roots that never came up. I am not sure exactly where, as it was forgotten that same year when it didn't grow.

After blowing off the dead fallen leaves, I see these leaves. At first, they were like nothing else on my property, so I wondered if it might be the early leaves of one of those two plants. But then later, I saw that there were similar plants in 2 other areas where I definitely did not plant those plants.

Could it be young leaves of astilbe or bleeding heart, or something else ?

My immediate next door neighbor also has what I think is Boston ivy. The leaves kind of resemble that also, and would explain why there might be some around my property.

what a nightmare ... i think they can grow 8 or 10 feet per year ... in my short growing season ...

I have done it all to my bleeding heart and here is my experience. If you cut back the very long branches and leave the remaining undergrowth behind it will look like a smallish greenish shrub (about 1/2 the size of the original) until it starts to yellow and die back on its own. THEN, cut back the rest. I cut back most of mine late last year all at the same time because it continued to bloom well into July (mine is in full shade though)and it did not flower well this year at all! As for moving it....be aware that it is MY experience that they have a tap root similar to lupins and you have to go deep when you move it. The less you disturb the tap root the better chance you have at having it come back again. That said, they are pretty hardy for the most part. Good luck!

There are a lot of plants that just look nice with bleeding hearts, but you're talking about something to specifically take the place of the plant, right? I'd love something like that too - ideally a perennial that's just coming up as the bleeding heart is dying down. Of course the other option is just to put in shade tolerant annuals like the coleus you're considering.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think I'm going to divide them in half in the fall and add some of the suggested plants next spring. They are just too big the way they are. I added some toad lilies and columbines to the bed this year, but I have to keep cutting the bleeding hearts back to keep them from smothering their neighbors. If they weren't so pretty when they bloomed I'd dig them up and be done with them. Totally Confused

I love them....native vine and old trees on plenty of ground, so I let them rip here. In fall, the intense burgundy they turn is amazing.

Your plant, Virginia Creeper is in the same genus as Boston Ivy; therefore the similar look. VC is Parthenocissus quinquefolia (five foliaged), BI is Parthenocissus tricuspidata (three).

I love my Creepers. I train them up my trees; they will continue to grow as long as there is support. They turn a brilliant red in the fall often after other trees have lost their leaves. Great plant in the right place.

Virginia Creeper - Beautiful and native as people say but take care. The vines can get unruly so I would only let it be if this is a wild, non-garden area.
