Around here, stores other than hardware type sell that sort of thing, among them farm stores; feed & seed stores; and certain garden centers.

Peggy, I really doubt there'd ever be enough demand for 50# bags of any of those things for any of the big box places to have any interest at all - I use small amounts of some of them, but a 50# bag of any would be a lifetimes supply for me [course that don't mean a real long time! :)]

and as Jean sez, the farm/feed supply and main nursery places have larger bags in most areas [like 2-5 kilo max for those animal products], and around here fish scrap and fish compost is available in bulk

myself I prefer compost, lots and lots of compost!

Forget those big box chains altogether and shop at the stores that are owned by your next door neighbor. Mostly better selection and better prices, except for the loss leaders the chains offer.
As one example, wife got me into a Wal-Mart and as I was wandering around I saw a display of oil sunflower seeds with the "special sale price" of $7.98 for a 25 pound bag. I normally bought oil sunflower seeds at the time for the every day price of $11.98 for a 50 pound bag, so I did not pay twice as much at Wal-Mart and did not buy what they had.

If they carry 50# bags of bunny food- they need to remove something else from the shelf. 50# bags of bunny food are large- stocking them will replace a lot of something else.

What do they sell to the general public that makes them less money than the 50# bags of bunny food? Seems obvious that it's good stuff to us, but the general public won't see the sense in buying bunny food in the lawn section.

Make friends with the folks in your local feed store. I like walking in and talking to the guy in Agway.

There is a certain amount of validity to Peggy's point. Organic fertilizers, supplements and soil amendments are not nearly as prevelent in some areas of the country as they are in others. For example, the west coast is very organic-minded and these products tend to be readily available. In fact, my nursery which is organic only, gets requests for these types of products through our online store from all over the country (and overseas!) even though the shipping costs on multiple 12 or 25LB bags of organic fertilizers or amendments are astronomical. However, rather than resorting to hardware or box stores, I'd focus the plea for more organics to the people that specialize in plants - retail nurseries and garden centers. These are the folks who should be promoting and encouraging organic gardening practices.

I'm so glad to hear that some of you are able to find these products. None of the feed stores here do; I have even been told they couldn't special order for me. I can get alfalfa pellets at a feed store. Same goes for nurseries. Once in a blue moon they will have an item, usually in smaller quantities. I keep requesting at those stores too. One advantage the big stores have is that they already have a nation wide transportation system and deal with 50 lb. bags on a regular basis. There must be folks that would feed the lawn, garden, organically if it were easy to do so. Weed and feed etc. is just so easy to buy
