How often should I use my soap/garlic spray?

I've had good luck using a water/soap/oil/garlic juice spray on my roses, petunias and marigolds that were being attacked by spider mites. (The garlic is supposed to deter them in the future; I have no idea if it actually does that!)

That was a small infestation compared to the group of eight neglected-until-this-year rose bushes at the side of our house. I sprayed them last night, and am now wondering how often to do it. For the other flowers, I sprayed every three or four days, but I'm wondering if it would hurt anything to do an experiment and spray every night for several days, each time "getting" bugs that didn't happen to be around the night before.

Just so you know, organic pesticides kill both bad and good insects. They can't tell if it is bad or good just because they are natural.

You would spray as often as necessary, but if that was more often then once a week I would be looking at why. Is the soil good and healthy so those plants can grow strong and healthy? Does the environment the plant is growing in an environment the plant needs?
As Minnie has already stated spraying any insecticide can kill off the beneficials as well as the pests.

My first tip would be don't fall into the trap of thinking you need all these miracle products, the only thing that will do is put you in debt. All you really need is good, healthy, nutrient rich soil with a complete soil foodweb. Me and a lot of people achieve this by merely topdressing a couples inches of compost annualy, while keeping your gardens mulch(mulch breaks down into compost and fertilizer). You dont need any expensive product in a bottle, what you need is good homeade compost and mulch. A soil test will tell you if you need to add anything, but i would just an inch or two compost and mulch until you get the results of the soil test. The test will tell you to add synthetic fertilizers(non organic) for whatever you are deficienct in(if even anything), you dont have to add those synthetic fertilzers though, you could go with organic alternatives. For example, instead of usong STEM(Soluble trace element mix) you could use azomite(crushed rock, or kelp seaweed). Your question about fertilizing seedlings.. Seedlings dont need fertilizer until they are around a month old. If the seedling is in your gardens mineral soil(sand,silt, clay), then your seedlings definetely dont need fertilizer, they can obtain it from the soil. How do you think nature grows plants, she arent spoon feeding it chemicals, she is merely dropping leaves, and other organic matter on a continuis basis. I try and imitate that for my garden. Neem oil is an organic alternative to other harmful insecticides, etc. i never used it, never needed it. But, some people really like it.. I would always go with a less toxic, safer alternative than glyphosate and stuff like that.. Dont get fooled into buying all these products, all you might need is a little compost, leaves, and hard work! Get a soil test to rest assured, and look for organic alternatives to the products the soil tests tells you. It's really that simple! Don't get overwhelmed! Best of luck!

The link below from the University of Colorado has a lot of information. Some key points: The usual concentration for insecticidal soap is 2%, I would go with a 1% solution (2 1/2 tbs per gallon) and I would rinse off the bush with pure water about half an hour after spraying, all to prevent leaf damage. I would use any liquid dish detergent, such as Joy or Palmolive. Soap solutions kill only insects that get hit by the spray directly, the dried soap residue on the leaves will not kill insects. Soap solutions kill aphids readily but I can't see a soap spray doing anything at all to thrips because thrips stay inside the blossoms where the spray won't contact them. You are right....dish soap can damage the leaves. That's why it might be better for you to use a product that is actually manufactured for this purpose and comes equipped with a label that tells you how much to use, how to use it, and how often. Spider mites will be very difficult to get rid of completely. 'Control' is about the best many of us achieve. 'Control' is GREAT, considering the species of plant you are trying to protect! Using insecticidal soap (directed to the underside of the foliage), frequent showers (with the stream directed to the underside of the foliage) you should be able to achieve good 'control'. You might consider mixing a solution of rubbing alcohol with water (in a 3:1 ratio) and doing a leaf test. Mist this solution on the underside of some foliage in a small area and wait a week or so. It's been a long time since I grew one of these palms (they are sooo prone to spider mites), but I'm sure I used alcohol when I did. To be on the safe side, do the leaf test. Alcohol mists really do a number on spider mites! You'll see this recommendation for these palms, for your information. Keep a misting bottle already loaded for convenient applications.

I don't think you understand how a soap-and-oil spray works. It only kills the insects that have actually been coated with it. If you don't spray it on, say, a ladybug, that bug will not be harmed. I don't know how much a deterrent it is once it's on the plant if it's just plain soap and oil with no garlic (see below.)

It's true that while I'm spraying for spider mites, I can get some lacewings, but quite frankly, if the lacewings had been doing their jobs, I wouldn't have spider mites!

The garlic is supposed to repel spider mites and aphids. I don't know if it does, but it definitely doesn't repel ladybugs, mantises and bees. It definitely DOES repel mosquitoes. There is an organic anti-mosquito spray on the market made only from super-concentrated garlic that is very effective for mosquitoes but has been proven to be harmless to all beneficial bugs, bees and birds.

Oh yes we do but we also know first hand the damage they can do to plants as well as beneficials. The effects of many 'home-made' recipes - both good and bad - has been well documented.

How often you spray would depend entirely on what the recipe you are using. There are many floating around and some do more harm to the plants and beneficials than any effect they might have on pests.

And as kimmsr said more than once a week is normally considered too often and a clear sign that it either it isn't working or that something else is causing the problem.

Blithely using home-made recipes with little understanding of exactly how they work or the long term effects is no better than indiscriminately using chemical pesticides and in some cases can do more harm.

Kim -- Thanks for the great article! It's more complete than the other articles I've seen. I'm happy to see that, according to this, I was definitely dealing with the spider mites in the correct way. Chemical insecticides kill everything BUT the spider mites, which go nuts; water+oil and/or organic vegetable-based soap is the recommended treatment.

The article also answered a question I thought of this weekend: If the idea is to smother them, why do you need soap in the oil spray? Sure enough, the article talks about using insecticidal soaps OR insecticidal oils. It also talks about the importance of hosing plants off well with just plain water (which I do to knock off as many as I could) and keeping dust off of them.
