Plants in the woods - ID help, please.

Yes, it's me again. Could you help me identify these 6 plants & trees? I hope my pictures aren't too big. Your time, effort, knowledge and assistance is greatly appreciated.

(1.)This shrub or tree has little white blooms on it.

(2.)This one has long trunk and leaf growth at the top. Several wild vines are forcing it to lean over.

(3.)A lot of these plants being covered by honeysuckle. Maybe blackberries?

(4.)Pretty leaves on this small tree or shrub. No clue??

(5.)Could this be pokeweed?

(6.)Small tree or shrub. No clue.

I see Vaccinium, Rhus, Rubus, Castanea and Hamamelis. Don't know the sword-leaved herbaceous perennial.

There's no rule saying you can't mix vegetables and ornamentals in the same garden. Furthermore, some gardeners line out ornamentals in the vegetable garden while they bulk up or until space becomes available elsewhere. Providing each has sufficient space and ornamentals do not interfere with cultivation and harvesting there is no problem.

To answer your question about the Virginia creeper.....the sap contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause reactions in sensitive people. It's advised, at the very least, that one should avoid touching their eyes and face after handling the vine. The berries are poisonous to humans, but birds and other animals use it as a food source.

Sure, the perennial is probably pokeweed. The "wisteria" is the sumac (Rhus) of my list.

The woods across the street were being taken over by English Ivy, Wisteria & Honeysuckle. I've been trying to pull out what I can while leaving plants, shrubs and trees that are beneficial to wildlife. I've been amazed to find out just how many plants, shrubs and trees out there provide food for birds and other wildlife. If it were not for what I've learned here on GW, I would have never taken on such a task. We're fortunate and blessed to have the woodland area across the street. It is my hope that the property owner never sells it. I'm not so sure that one person can win the battle against English Ivy, Chinese Honeysuckle and Wisteria. Anyway, the knowledge you've shared here has motivated me to put forth some elbow grease in an effort to preserve the woods across the street. I've only made a dent.

Bboy, I tip my hat to you...5 out of 6 in no time flat. Yes, I can always count on you. You've taught me a lot. Oh, Bboy, if you read this...chestnut, any idea about whether or not it's the native kind? I've been looking at images on the web and I'm still not sure. Actually, I was really blown away by that one. I couldn't help but think about, "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire." Never thought about having chestnuts in GA. Yes, I have a lot to learn. (LOL)

Bubbleoffplumb, trust me, I've dug up, cut up and removed a lot of wisteria. I don't think I'll win the battle against the wisteria in the woods. Those plants will send off a shoot that reaches 40 feet or more into the woods. I appreciate your input; however, after some web searching, bboy is right again (I just don't know what kind it is yet.) Thank you for trying to help me out, it was nice of you.

Fatamorgana, Phytolacca americana, pokeweed is what I was hoping for for some reason. I think the birds love the berries it produces and I'm trying to help the birds. Personally, I think it's an interesting plant. I'll be watching it to see if it produces those berries later on in the year.

Thanks to all! This is my favorite forum. There are just so many helpful folks in-the-know here.

The Castanea could be Chinkapin (Castanea pumila), not American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) which is not even found in your area. Still a great plant.

Thanks, Esh. I'll check Chinkapin images out on the web to compare. I'm happy to hear from you that it's a great plant. Regardless of what specific kind, you know how excited I get when I find a keeper.

You've got them all, I think - the first one is probably Vaccinium stamineum, Deerberry; it's the only one that has those open flowers, the others are more tubular.

The Rhus is probably Rhus copallinum, Winged Sumac (because of the wings on the leaf stem).

There's a bunch of different Rubus species - hard to tell which that is.

The last two are definitely Pokeweed and Witch Hazel.

The fourth one might well be Chinkapin; I'm not real familiar with it. If you want to read a sad story, though, look up Chestnut Blight. The true American Chestnut used to be one of the commonest big trees in the northeastern forest; just after the turn of the century the chestnut blight showed up and basically killed them all. I live in NJ and you still sometimes find saplings sprouting from the dead stumps; but only twice have I seen them that were big enough to make fruit. Even the Dutch Elm disease didn't kill all the elms; there are still plenty around, although they don't get as big as they used to.

Weedwoman, you're right! I compared images on the web of Vaccinium stamineum, Deerberry, and that's it. Now, I know that we have 3 different kinds of blueberries out there. Awesome! Also, the Rhus copallinum, Winged Sumac, seems to be the one we have here. I look forward to seeing these plants in the fall. Your confirmation on the pokeweed is also appreciated.
