Name That Plant!

Tree/Shrub identification help

We cleared the growth out from around a pond this weekend & found this tree growing right by the water. I say tree...it is about 8ft tall with ten branches coming off of it. The trunk is only about 3in around. Any help with this is greatly appreciated! If I can identify it my husband won't take the backhoe to it!

It is a native azalea. Is it fragrant? Probably it is the Piedmont azalea, Rhododendron canescens. Very nice plant and worth keeping. It is really considered a shrub.

Thank you esh ga!!! You have saved a shrub in NC! I am so excited...time to get out my loppers & get all the vines & such off of it! Thank you again.

Looks like a broad-leaf privet, also called tree privet or Japanese privet. They can get up to 30 feet tall. They are invasive and not good in hurricanes. If you don't need it, I'd take it out.

#2 and #3 are correct. #1 genus is correct, species is tatarica. L tatarica and L morrowii are quite similar, the latter having hairy leaves. The two species will hybridize so separating the two can be difficult. L japonica is a vine.

I think I answered this on DG an hour or so ago? Dracaena fragrans (corn plant) I think. My D. Lemon-Lime bloomed in winter two years ago and was very fragrant, I added a note to my picture that it smelled like a Dutch hyacinth.
