I've had a chance to try some stumpwork embroidery. I love the 3D effect. Here is my first piece.

It combines ribbon work and silk embroidery (delphiniums and agapanthus)

The hollyhocks are a type of buttonhole stitch but the most fun to do were the ladybugs.

And, of course, thinking about IU6 brings a very big smile.

I really liked your water jasmine, maybe you can show it again in the future. I'm one of those people who doesn't mind the rain; in fact, I like it -- but even I can have moments of wanting it to end, especially when I'm eager to be out in the garden. I'm not a seasoned N'westerner but I am a very seasoned gray-skies Midwesterner, so I've had lots of experience waiting for sun... some of the things that lift my spirits are: trips to the local nursery to look at what's new/blooming -- walks outside whenever possible (a drizzle doesn't keep me in and being outside always makes me feel better) -- getting cozy with a good gardening book/catalog -- a walk or drive around anywhere (neighborhood, arboretum, greenhouse, etc.) to see what's happening with plants. Seems there's something new every week. I like trips to the local farmer's market for fresh veggies and flowers -- a bouquet of flowers (even just a small one, a few blooms from my yard) is always a spirit-lifter. Any day that isn't a downpour, if I just can't wait, I can get outside and at the very least work on weeds or pruning or other clean-up tasks that don't involve getting into the soil of the flower beds (don't want to compact the soil). And, this time of year I take a *lot* of joy just in the fact that the days are getting longer! The short winter days are lots harder on me than the gray days and I'm so glad to see the light last longer each day. Hang in there -- the sun will return, more and more frequently!

Gosh Karen...just 'Looking' at your retail 'therapy goodies' gave me a lift! I'm so glad you got out for the day to have lunch and shop with GF's. You scored some really great things. Love all your Bunnies and that bunny runner is so cute. The birds are really pretty, and the little dainty cup for Teegan will be perfect for her. That 'bunny frog' is a hoot..looks like he's saying 'get me out of this silly outfit' ! lol Glad Mr O noticed and got a laugh over your Golfing Santa Cookie Jar..and you didn't even have to fill it with cookies! I like the colors on the 'dressed' bunny shelf...I know what you mean about them being dressed, but this one is done nicely...and has a vintage look to him. Your DD found you an impressive looking stag. He should be fun to decorate with next season. It's nice to run away and play for the day and bring home great 'stuff'... I know if I lived nearby..I'd have joined in too. jane

why you want to listen to an electrician tell you about wood work? well since you do, i might as well chime in as well since i'm an electrician too. contrary to popular belief wood DOES conduct electricity. well, when it's wet anyway. do NOT shellac first before staining. didn't you know shellac is a SEALER!!! READ THE CAN! seals metal even. As for gel stain, all the fir i have stained with it sucks it right down. I don't see any diff btwn the non odor and regular stank mineral spirits. After using both i would never buy regular again! You must not have sanded down far enuf to get past the silly cone or whateva. You should do what i did on my fir. STAIN IT, once or twice or whatever. i have been using three kinds to duplicate the 103 yr old crap in my house. i used mahogany minwax gel stain followed by a custom mixed liquid oil based stain, next an oak minwax stain. i have been using poly clear coat but now i use amber shellac after the stain and you can NOT use a poly varnish over that it must be oil based (again, read the shellac can). for what i need i am very happy with the staining, 2-3 coats of amber shellac, then i may or may not coat again with an oil based clear. in some cases after the stain i have used only TEAK OIL for 2-3 coats and then TUNG OIL (which is varnish btw). I think to get the closest original look of my 100 yr old fir, with a yellow to gold grain, that avoiding the mahogany gel coat and just staining and usinig the teak and tung oil is the closest match. and for fixing scratches nothing beats wiping it down with teak oil. it be da bom. peace out and vote for obama-lomma-ding-dong!

Hmm, what a coincidence! These things lift my spirits, too :)

On a side note: Sarah came home from school wanting a Brittany Spaniel (they did reports on pets). I'm going to show her Clousseau's picture, and she'll want to know what's in the gene pool.

The sprouting geraniums are tempting me!

Clousseau is a great 'nurse'.

Those pictures generated some good smiles here too - and there was an impressive amount of talent shown in them. I'm hope things continue to move along smoothly - and quickly.

Is that your David? Clousseau really looks like a Clousseau, to me. His face looks like a French gentleman. [g] Amazingly detailed embroidery. I just love that little garden scene. That will make a great heirloom for your kids some day. What a huge pile of cards. So many people who are thinking of David and wishing for his speedy recovery. I am with Marian...I am tempted by the little geranium seedlings too and what a cheery pot of crocus and rainbow socks! I can see why you are so encouraged Mary, you have a lot to be thankful for, for sure!!

Mary, a lovely collection. The socks just radiate warmth, and the stumpwork is quite lovely. But what really made me smile was the message on one of the brown cards! After my son's birth (C-section), I could not be released from the hospital until I could re-master that art. :0

Here's hoping your spirits continue to soar.

Wow Mary, each and every one of those pictures shows something special - I'm smiling now too.

The stumpwork is amazing, you always find the neatest projets.

Funny but I don't recall ever seeing a picture of Clousseau and some how had a black lab pictured.

I had to go back and spot the "brown card" How appropriate for the Idylls - where is Sue?

The crocus centerpiece is wonderful with the neat pot and the curly willow. Thanks for sharing some wonderful things that probably lifted quite a few spirits.

So, instead of us cheering Mary up,she has cheered us up with some lovely things. The socks are a wonderful blend of colors. Did you do the pot of crocus yourself or was it a gift? I really like it. But what I really like is seeing David at home with his faithful companion.
I had never heard of stumpwork. You did great.
I hope you made it to the concert today.

How absolutely marvelous! all of these are lifting my spirits too Mary. I love the stumpwork and the seedlings are so neat. Don't you just love how the first true leaves are just like the adult leaves in miniature?
