Sometimes things happen and you just have to do what's best. And so it was with the ceiling in our den. It had to be fixed. That meant moving everything out.

Soooo, we decided that as we put things back, we would clean and sort "stuff." You know what I mean....all the things that gather up through the years.

In this case....Books. Three big, tall book cases full and overflowing with books. Good Books, well read Books, waste-of-money Books, and other odds and ends of Books.

One pile goes to the recycle center as they are old, not very good, and falling to pieces. Maybe the guys at the center will read them.

Another pile will go to our church's Thift Store. I don't ever intend to garden, redecorate or raise kids ever again. They are in good shape, seldom used!

But there is one that I just have to keep. It's old, beat up, and falling to pieces.

It was in the summer of 1957. Our first born son decided to read it. He had just finished the First Grade!!! He was an exceptional reader, and it took him the rest of the summer. He enjoyed it. (he had heard us talk about it) And I think he understood it. It was his first grown up book and we were so proud of his deciding to read it and sticking with it.

It was Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and The Sea."

Nice post Aggie and what a great memory. That book definitely is a keeper.Getting rid of books is a toughie,that's for sure. I'm slowly doing the same thing and it hasn't been easy. So are you getting rid of all your mysteries?

Get rid of mysteries???? Surely you jest!! Nope. The DH just finished up going through the Hillerman series AGAIN. I'm lucky in that I can read a book and forget details so that it's like reading it for the first time no matter how many times I read it.

I get as much pleasure out of the style of the writer as I do the plot of the story.

Linnea, the dahlia tubers should be OK. I don't have callas or begonia, but as long as they have not been frozen they should be alright. I dug up my dahlia tubers in October and stored them in my detached garage. But it was so warm in November that they have sprouted! I managed to move them all to my insulated but unheated attic this afternoon. They should be alright until spring. I wanted to dig up my annual geranium to pot them up, but was too tired. If they survive until this weekend, I may pot them up and bring them inside this weekend. :-D Many things in my garden are still in bloom, having survived light frost several times. They may freeze by the weekend since the temp is supposed to drop to 20s tonight and tomorrow. Sue, donnabaskets probably meant Leucojum when she mentioned Snowflakes. I have a lot of Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant'. They are sprouting just like Daffodils. I love this spring bulb. It multiplies very fast, though....much faster than any daffodils I have. I need to thin them out only after 3-4 years.

The more I looked at the accent tile the better I liked it. Decision made. )(*&^ a 6 week back order on it. At least the main tile is in. That should work well, as it is tones of kitty litter grey with highlights of cat hair brown. Now my designer friend says that what is 6 weeks compared to 20 years of enjoyment...but she is already divorced, and I dunno how well DH would take 6 weeks. On to e-bay. Would you believe I think I found the same thing? with a 4 day delivery time???? Heck even if it is not exact, it would be close enough for the shower, so at least part of the bathroom would be functional. I wear out my fingers calculating square footage of the different tile sizes for shower stall and bathroom walls. Now that the tub will not be along the wall with the sloped ceiling, how far up should the wall tile go??? and where should the accent piece be??? and do I want the shower seat to have the wall tile or the floor tile or both???? and as my philosophical friend (not the designer one) would say, against a backdrop of infinite time and space, does it really matter anyway???? too early in the morning for a stiff drink, so I have strong coffee instead. The Thermasol unit is now in at the post office, so off I trot. The ol' credit card is smoking so badly by this time I am afraid to walk near a smoke detector. Quite the unit. Handyman Dave and I decide to put the unit in DH's half of the clothes closet as that is closest to the shower. Did I mention DH is still at his mother's? Dump day is tomorrow, so I loaded up the trashed drywall into the back of the pick-up. I salvaged the useable 2x4's, figured I could use the grab bar to replace the barn door handle, and eyeballed the old sink to see if it could make a waterer for the chickens. I was unscrewing the toilet bowl handle to keep as a spare "just in case" when I came to my senses and said who was I kidding anyway and tossed the lot. Tomorrow I will swing by the dump then head to town to pick up the sink (Neptune Delight) and toilet (Toto Drake) as the plumbing store just called to say they were in.

I'm really, very surprised that most who have replied to this thread are, totally, unaware that most elderly folks will NOT, in fact, ask for what they need. And i do think a bit of understanding and a lot less condemnation is called for. Yes, I do know that taking care of a loved one, long term, can be frustrating....but, I truly believe that whatever YOU think you are going through is always much, much harder on your loved one. Never, ever forget that. As to bit**ing about loved ones doing certain things based, solely, on trying to maintain a controlling posture? Geez! What else do they have left? BM's... I can't think of anything more personal than that...please, please... try and be more understanding of the indignities involved...No, not your, percieved, indignities.. your loved ones REAL indignities. Regarding medication orders...for instance.. most orders are PRN.... PRN means as needed...older patients are loathe to ask for help...even if they do need pain relief...they, wrongly, assume that IF they really do need it (even if they have told the Dr. they are in pain) then the Dr. would have ordered it. The problems start when the patient expects to get pain meds because the Dr. did subscribe them (they know this because the Doc has told them he has ordered pain meds...he might, even, say to the patient "don't worry you will have meds whenever you need them)......but, PRN... as needed... the dr.'s order would state xxx drug, Q4, PRN. Q4 means every 4 hours... problem is, it's only given every 4 hours if the patient, then, requests it. And they don't....they assume that the nurses will decide if/that they DO need them... they need them...actually, because of the Dr.'s words and orders (misunderstood orders... most patients have no idea what PRN means, or have any knowledge, at all, of medical terminology, let alone, pain med terminology) they will, most likely, NOT get the needed pain relief...nurses, nor Dr.'s, ever explain this to the patients. And, on and on, it goes...food orders, meds...constipation can also be caused from meds. Lastly, I hate to see posts that draw the line, somewhere, anywhere ... of what the caregiver is willing to put up with...Mothers do not draw the line.. they do everything... including cleaning up s**t.... often, for many, many children...it never ceases to amaze me that 1 mother can take care of 2-4-5-6 and even 10 kids all by herself, and yet, those same 2-4-5-6 and even 10 kids can't take care of 1 mother. Yes, I am aware that, sadly, in lots of situations, care is left to one or two kids out of that 5-6 or 10....shame on the slackers...and kuddos to the kids that do take care.. But, do it anyway, even if you have no help...it's the right thing to do.. I'd give my life..really, to have my Mom back to take care of. Silly

Amending the soil is definitely top priority. Not much grows here so there isn't a lot of stuff I can use for composting. (My garden is 2500 sq. ft. so yea it's going to take a bunch.) I do have horse poo and probably access to a lot of leaves this fall from a friend in town so I'm working on a plan to start as soon as I start pulling up things. I was over reading in 'Soil, Compost & Mulch' last night and hurt my brain again so I came back here. Thank you so much Peter for taking the time to provide more information on bacterial diseases, it is appreciated. I'd like to try to avoid the copper if it will eventually build up and hurt my soil (it's bad enough already). Very interesting about the bacteria not over-wintering and probably coming in on transplants or seeds. The plot thickens... The tomato plants are all my own starts. These seeds were purchased from local big box stores - Better Boy from Ferry Morse, Ind. Day from Livingston seed, Rutgers from American seed and the 4OJ was from Burpee online. I don't think it came from the seeds, here's why (and of course I could very well be wrong). On May 30 I planted 16 plants that showed no spots. About 3 weeks later they had spots. I clipped most of the bad branches (some plants still had spots but I had to leave some leaves) and mulched. I gave 3 plants of different types to my neighbor in May. I was just over there yesterday and none of hers have spots. I still had 4 plants left so I planted and mulched them in a different garden on June 30; 2 Rutgers, a 4OJ and an Ind. Day. None of these have spots. I may have an idea but it's sort of far-fetched. My potatoes are right next to my tomatoes. I planted reds and whites that are my own stock (this is the 3rd year they've grown in my soil) and some russets. The russets came from a random stand I noticed when we were visiting in MN last May. The russets all have tiny spots on the leaves. In June I noticed how far behind the growth of the russet plants were. I saw the spots and the leaves were sort of curling. In the last month the plants have finally grown more, are blooming and aren't as curly but the spots are still there. BTW my reds and whites are fat and happy without a spot to be seen, weird. While it seems possible the russets are the culprit (because I think I read somewhere that potatoes and tomatoes can share diseases) it seems so odd that within 3 weeks of planting and the potatoes only up for 2 weeks all my tomato plants were infected. Could bacteria really spread that fast?

Getting rid of books? OK, I must admit that sometimes I pack up some books and send them to my oldest son's
DSO, but she sends me some of her purchases and mine get passed on to her mother, her sister and to a senior retirement home in need of reading material. Whoever has the fun of cleaning out my abode somewhen has a job.

Feels good to clean up and out at the same time, double whammy. Did you get the fan fixed? I love when little ones read. It's the best legacy you can pass on. Good on you!

My single brother (the other two are long since married) has an entire bedroom filled with books! That's why I preface it with he isn't married; that wouldn't be fair, now would it? ;) So we got him an eReader for Christmas. He says he likes it, so at least he's likely to quit collecting them. And maybe, eventually, he'll finish the hardcopy books, while continuing to pass them on to my little one who reads them and passes them on... I wonder what bro will do with his spare bedroom when he's done? He just refinanced and his house will be paid off in 5 years. Sitting pretty, lucky duck! :)

Ds got me a something electronic so I can download audio books. I plan on getting what I have in hard copy in audio- 'cause I am like Agnespuffin. Why do I say "something electronic"? Because he hasn't set us our Christmas presents yet!! He has them, he just hasn't got around to mailing them. I have this fantasy that if I have audio books I will do more of the boring mind numbing chores like scrub walls, paint, etc.

Tibs, I use my mp3 player for audiobooks. I listen to them while I am walking. I love it. In fact, I enjoy it so much, it's my reward for walking ;)

I have an ereader too. I like it. I really like the convenience and the back light of the screen, it makes reading in bed easier. Unfortunately the screen reorients itself if you move...that drives me crazy. The downside to the ereader for me is that I "borrow" from the library, but it's hard to pick a book if you don't know what you are looking for. In a physical library you can browse and flip through books looking for something interesting.

Have we had any discussions about Kindle vs Nook? I have a Kindle Fire, I like it. I'm not thrilled with the whole "Amazon is in control and tracking me" thing. If you "check out" a book from the "library", it is not the library, it is from Amazon, they track what you read, and they only let you have it for 7 days. I wished I had known that before I bought it, I might have gone with the Nook.

If it helps, there is another option! It's well rated and inexpensive. If you want your reader for READING, then Alurtek is another option. I think it's Borders version, but at any rate, here it is below. This is the one I gave my brother (who is known for being "too honest" and said he liked it. Seemed to mean it). If I ever get one, I'll let you know my personal thoughts on it.
