Probably Lonicera fragrantissima. If so, it's an invasive in many areas including North Carolina.

Agree with Lonicera, non-native. Tennessee has a huge problem with non-native honeysuckles.

I believe it is sweet breath of spring. It's fruiting now, fleshy little berries, often double. Does anyone know if these are edible?

Sweet breath of spring = Lonicera (honeysuckle). Non-native and invasive.

I have a Sweet Breath of Spring and it's been in the same place for about 15 years... never has spread anywhere so far.

It is spread by birds eating the berries - often pooped out in another location, not necessarily your yard.

From what I've read I suspect the invasive reputation is based on confusing this with Japanese Honeysuckle, the vine. I have only found one bush, and it appears to have little interest in taking over the world. I personally wouldn't mind if there were more of them.

Several shrubby honeysuckles are listed as invasives in many US states. I don't think there is confusion with Lonicera japonica which is a vine.

To repeat my question, anyone know if the fruit is edible?

Actually that's an interesting question. I can't remember ever hearing that they were edible, and considering how prolifically they fruit if they were good to eat I imagine they'd get mentioned.

According to the a quick internet search 'Honeysuckle' fruits and leaves are mildly toxic, but the sites I saw didn't get any more specific than 'Honeysuckle' in terms of ID. There are a lot of Honeysuckles. Apparently they're also toxic to dogs.

I found one mention of eating Lonicera villosa fruit in an old (1958) book on edible plants, but that's a native one and not the one you've got.

We used to suck the nectar out of the tubes of the Japanese Honeysuckle flower when we were kids, apparently that is not toxic.

Might it be a better world if the word "invasive" was prohibited on this one forum? 'Tis the season for the bickering to begin in earnest. Show us your honeysuckles, mimosas, privet, garlic mustard, wisteria, mysterious kudzu sprouts, etc... so we may inject our opinions? Just ID & move on. These plants are here 'cuz they are either pretty or tasty, and unless somebody's going to go cut them all down, people are going to want to know what they are and maybe even (gasp!) comment on their aesthetic value. Just the facts, ma'am...

If every one of us who hates alien invasives went around with our brush killer and sprayer, we'd never get anything else done, would we?

But it isn't out of line IMNSHO to point it out when a plant is invasive and hopefully discourage someone from propagating it.
