I think my cat ate the blooms

of my new Bulbophyllum biflorum. I left the pot on the couch as I was preparing the photo set-up just outside the door. When I got back in, all the blooms were gone, with no plant debris anywhere, so my impression is that the cat formerly known as Mimi ate them.

Has you cat ever eaten any part of your plants?

will eat anything green indoors if I don't keep a pot of grass growing by her water bowl. I change it out with another one about every week, clip it back and it continues to grow. She likes it.

The leaf issue is superficial, either insect damage or perhaps a "shot hole" type disease. The more serious issue is the trunk problem. If its a possibility for you, I would call in a professional, certified arborist to deal with it. If not, I'm sure people here can offer suggestions. Off the top of my head, I'd say you would want to drain it out or sponge out the water, clean out as much soft, decayed tissue as possible, treat with a fungicidal/bactericidal compound, and then fill with some inert material to build up a "dome" in the center that could shed water beyond the trunk cavity. Perhaps the "Great Stuff" type expanding foam insulation sold in a can at home improvement stores would work -- it does make a waterproof foam that weathers pretty well outdoors for at least 3-4 years (I've used it on my pond border), can be painted to hide it, and is easily removed by carving out with a sharp knife if you change your mind or have to rework the project.

Love the party favors! I've known cats to do this, luckily none of mine. Guess I should be lucky my old kitty prefers clean laundry, esp fresh from the dryer. Also love task lighting for the many-legged boarders though I don't know that they truly "need" this, tiny lights might be more for hamptonmeadow's viewing pleasure. I do think the little guys would appreciate radiant heat though. I'm sticking by coral. It's relaxing and sets off all manner of creature, the black, the fuzzy brown, the albino. Looooove paisley! Nina, sounds like you've got material for a thread of your own, all those Xs with funny stories (maybe less so at the time). You could call it "housekeeping tales of romance & remorse" or "stories I wish weren't mine" or maybe just a simple list of your pet names for them..... I'm starting to see new meanings in your screen name!!!

I don't have anoles, didn't think they would eat the Monarch cats due to the milkweed toxins. I saw a flying bug critter carrying them off. They apparently sting them with an egg and carry them off and stuff them in a hole somewhere. That is why I switched mostly to hummingbird plants.

Yes....they love to chew on ONcidium leaves.....even with grass available...devil's spawn.....

My cats (2) have absolutely no interest in orchids (or other house plants) whatsoever. They have easy access (the bay window where they sleep) to paphs, a stan, an oncid, and some others, and have never even taken a nibble.

They are allowed out, so they must get their fill then.

But I feel for you!

I also have to keep 1"-3" river rock on top of the soil in every houseplant or she'll dig the plant out and have herself a new potty! She's never been outside but she loves the screened porch, sleeps out there at night in the spring/summer/fall.

Interestingly, even though I can't detect a scent from my biflorum, if left outside it becomes covered in flies. Just because we can't detect a scent, it might well be extremely enticing to the-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi.

You may also want to entertain the possibility that the-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi has fallen further into a deep psychological abyss brought on by your cavalier response to the role reversal you subjected him/her to at such a young, impressionable age and has become murderous. The-cat-who-used-to-be-Mimi should seriously consider pleading insanity. The earlier bed wetting may just have been a prelude to what is yet to come. Sleep with one eye open and don't leave small children alone with that cat.

Nelson - my cats - well, down to one now sadly - never showed interest in any indoor plants unless they were plastic, believe it or not. How weird is that? But they were/are allowed out on the patio briefly for a daily chomp of grass that is promptly upchucked. Have you tried providing cat oats or grass for the poor green-deprived critter? :>)
