Jamie, there are plenty of aquatic plants, but we seldom grow them as container plants in soil. I would not consider a willow tree to be aquatic. All the willows on our property grow in areas where the ground dries out occasionally during the growing seasons. They are never in a constant state of being waterlogged. I think maybe you're thinking of a mangrove environment, as opposed to a rain forest. In mangrove swamps, plants and trees have adapted to being in water. In a rain forest, the trees have adapted to seasons of high humidity and lots of rains. Orchids, for example, enjoy the humidity and rains, but couldn't be grown in a constant state of wetness. I'm not really knowledgeable enough to explain the chemical breakdowns and the science of it all, but I can tell you that in nature, there's a certain balance kept by all the living and non-living organisms and the constant decomposition going on. It's a cycle that works very well in a garden environment... but it doesn't work in a pot. Within the confines of a pot, it's next to impossible to keep everything in a state of balance because the same living organisms are not present cycling the decomp... and an organic environment in a pot can quickly become unbalanced and toxic. That's why it works best to keep a more inorganic medium in containers. Perhaps Al or someone can explain mycorrhizal fungi, which have a symbiotic relationship with plants, and how they fit into container growing. There's a huge difference between water in vapor form, or being slightly moist... and being in a constant state of wetness. Most container grown plants dislike being consistently wet. The roots can't survive being waterlogged all the time. They need oxygen and a chance to "dry out" for periods of time, and a fine, compacted soil that holds too much moisture for long periods of time does not allow for the necessary exchange of oxygen and gases. I'm probably doing a poor job of explaining it... we can't really talk about growing in the ground and growing in a confined container in the same breath... the two environments are at opposite ends of the growing spectrum. Instead of comparing the two environments, I think of them as two completely separate subjects. Each has a different set of needs. In a garden, nature controls most things... in a pot, we are in control... we are playing the part of Mother Nature.

In my opinion Bloody Mary is an illegitimate name, it is actually Majesty which is a very old hybrid. Some wholesaler probably had thousands to sell but didn't know the name, so made one up. I've been growing Majesty for decades and "Bloody Mary" for a few years, there is no difference between the two. Leland Laren, Jay is correct... I agree that your specimen is Pink Princess that's lost its variegation. Note the pink stripes along petiole edges, this is typical of Pink Princess and would not occur on any other philo, especially a non-variegated one. If you haven't done it already, it would be interesting if you would take cuttings from your plant to see if latent nodes along the stems would produce new plants with variegation. Cuttings near the base, or the base itself, would be most likely to produce variegation. Of course that means butchering your plant more than you might like. I have many, many plants of Pink Princess, including large ones in 3 gallon pots. My experience is that in general, the bigger they grow, the less variegation they have. Among new offsets from propagated plants, I often get one or two with no variegation. Interestingly, I see no difference whatsoever between these unvariegated plants and an old, vintage philodendron called Royal Queen. So I think Pink Princess is a sport from Royal Queen, perhaps occurring 80 to 100 years ago. Please post results if you've propagated your plant already, or might consider it this spring or summer. None of these plants are native plants. You might try posting over in the "Name That Plant" forum. However..The "philodendron" is actually Tradescantia Spathacea, I believe, and the "unknown plant" is called a False Aralia. I don't think the "Pepperomia" is a Pepperomia.

I am going to take a few cuttings and try and propagate a smaller plant and hopefully save the original in the re-pot process. ===>>> brilliant on so many levels... multiple ways to root ... while you repot the elder ... and knowledge for the sake of knowledge ... 3 thumbs up ... i call the neighbor .. lol btw ... wood floor... i presume you need a pot with no drain holes .... rocks in teh bottom do not create drainage ... get a new fancy pot with no holes ... and then get a matching black pot with holes ... that drains.. and then learn to water.. so you dont fill up the fancy pot ... its called a pot in pot system ... you might also discuss good potting media ... in the other forum ... try to avoid MG if you can.. and dont reuse this stuff ... when i had these types of houseplants.. they went outside in full shade all summer ... and just when they go out.. is a great time to repot ... this way.. they get the additional light for the growing season .. so they might look better when back in the house in winter .... full bright shade outdoors is better than anything indoors ... ken ps: liana.. think tarzan.. lol ... darn gravity and all ...
