Rescued Palm

Hi All,

I just rescued this from the hallway in my apartment building. I haven't had much luck identifying it online.

It currently stands about 5 feet tall, single stem, single leaves sprouting from the top.

Hi & welcome to Gardenweb! Nice looking tree. Come on over to the house plant forum if you have any questions. These plants are much more sensitive to tap water chemicals than most. Worth getting something more pure for this plant, like distilled, condensate from dehumidifier or A/C, rain, melted snow.

Amazing how disposable a society we have become isn't it? I would have done the same thing. Pygmy dates are fine palms and I have something of a Date Palm obsession as partially reflected in my username (nj oasis). You may be interested to know, that each one is either male or female, so if they flower for you, chances are you will have cross pollination. (My largest one is definitely a boy.) A few years ago, I picked up enormous clumps of Yucca recurvifolia that were left curbside--now I have them all planted in the hottest/driest areas where nothing else succeeds.

OK, we dug out the palm this weekend, and despite putting it in a good loose soil that it should've loved, we found the roots really didn't stray too far, if at all, from the original root ball. Most new root growth was down at the base of the rootball and didn't travel horizontally as I had expected. Even so, there wasn't enough new growth to do damage when we moved it(fingers crossed). We put it in a 20 gallon pot (original pot was a squat 15 gal). I added a fistful of earthworms to the pot, watered with Superthrive, and located it in a shady area that is 100% protected from the wind. This tree was always hesitant to grow. The only growth spurts it consistently had occurred a day after watering it with heavily diluted Growmore Seaweed Extract (happened 5 out of 5 times). I don't think it was as healthy as the first Chambeyronia I purchased. I'd like to water it with the extract again to help with any shock, but am hesitant because I don't know if it would harm or help. Any advice?

"it would be a waste of time and resources" we'll review this: A plant, a tree that somone else "forsook" they gave it away to a better home, it is now sitting in "intensive" care with assurances what kind of resources/how much resources gets "wasted", giving it a look at every now and then? "Could require a long time??? I am cheap thrifty and frugal,mostly because we are quite impoverished we CANt just "run out and buy". and if this is the case more animals would die rather than BE RESCUED. I have some kind of time. There are times when my 56 years feels like the end, right now I bet I have enough years to give this palm a chance/try. Uhm THANK YOU to everyone who has encouraged I'll take it from here "enjoy" to those who discourage.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, this particular bar, and a sister one down the beach, DO rescue their palms. What happens after they're removed I don't know. Unfortunately, other places up and down the shore simply let them die off. If I had the room, Id make inquiries myself about salvaging one. Alas, I just don't.

i dont see much wrong with that plant.. that would indicate a water issue ...

though dont get me wrong..... wouldnt hurt to use such..

the tip browning happens every winter up here in furnace land .... not enough humidity in the house ....

unless purp sees something i am missing ....????

No, Ken, it looks healthy, though the brown tips show that it could use some TLC. Avoiding giving it water known to make it sick should help. In the spring, I would investigate the roots also.

It's still in it's 12" plastic tub that I assume it came in. There are tendrils of roots coming out of the drain holes - I was going to repot it this week - should I wait until spring? Is it dormant now?

It's strictly indoor as long as we're in this apartment - no balcony. ( Notwithstanding that it's 8 degrees F here right nowÃ¢ÂÂ¦ )

No, it's not dormant. If you're going to do it inside, now would be fine, as long as it's not too cold on the floor (assuming the pot will sit on the floor.) If there's a solid pancake of roots at the bottom, slicing a lot of that off will help keep it growing well. You may need something a little more sturdy/strong than scissors. Table covers for birthday parties are easy to find for $1-2, probably worth it to make cleanup as easy as picking that up, dumping it off outside. Can be folded & saved for next time you repot something.
