Name That Plant!

I don't know what it is, but somehow im killing it!

Hi there, I am not much of a plant person, & inherited this plant a year ago. I have no idea what it is, but it used to be all good, but now it looks all dreary and skinny (it used to be kinda thicker...? More Cactus like...

Anyone know what it is, and have any advise how I can avoid making it worse, and perhaps revive it? I have tried putting it out of direct sunlight, and then also in a very sunny room. I think I may have over watered it???

I think it's a Schlumbergera. Are you overwatering it?

What state are you in? All zone 8's are not created equal. I am going to say that overwatering is one of your problems. The tomato plant looks like "toast" to me and I would recommend starting over. The lettuce looks fine and the pepper should be on life support. Here in Western Oregon Zone Eight we are having unseasonably warm and dry weather. But it is still too early to put out unprotected tomato plants. Those nights when it was "37ish" it might have been colder in your garden and the tomatoes don't like a chill and will react as in your photo. Hi Tabor, As Bonnie said the first one is a dahlia. The second one is going to bloom soon, so if not a marigold, it will be easier to id then. The third one is a tomatillo or another member of the Physalis family. There are wild plants that are relatives of tomatillos and look very similar, so it is possible you got one one of those growing if you didn't plant tomatillos. Looks like bindweed? Of course everything looks like bindweed after battling it in my garden. Does it wind itself around any vertical stems? If you pull it slowly out of the ground does a few inches of whitish stem come up from below ground? Does it grow extremely fast? If so, then it might be bindweed. Wanting it gone is the the hard part. Roots of this pest can go down 15 feet or more. I don't think there is any easy answer, other than keep doing what you're doing, constantly pulling it, preferably as soom as it emerges. Plastic mulch helps but it will find tears or gaps in the plastic like a moth finds a flame. I think the deep roots pose a challenge to those who would use chemicals like Roundup on it. A few years of vigilance should weaken the root system enough to make it go away. Wayne

Here's a tip for anyone going on a cruise or vacation. Write down a list of what goes in all suitcases and carryons. Keep the list in your purse so you can refer to it during the trip. And when you're home unpacking, make sure everything on the list gets put away properly. I call it "reverse packing". I once made a list and used it for several years. Hey, travelling with two kids (any age) is not simple. And for stupidest goofs-when I was visiting family in Buffalo NY one winter, I left my winter snow boots in the motel. I placed them next to the TV, intending to wear them. Somehow I left without them. I called the hotel the next day but they couldn't find them. Who would (steal/ throw out) a well-worn pair of boots ?

Your plant is a Rose Easter Cactus, Hatiora (Rhipsalidopsis) rosea. It is a true cactus, but a jungle cactus as opposed to a desert cactus. So they can handle some shade quite well, and prefer a richer soil, though it should be well draining, than a desert cactus. They also require more water than a desert cactus except for a dormancy period in winter. That being said, I think it is limp because you overwatered it. After flowering I would probably take it out of the pot and check the root system for rot, and repot, maybe in a slightly smaller clay pot with a well draining mix.

The best way to drain off surplus moisture is the tilt the pot slightly and support it with something - stones, a piece of rock, etc.
Then take paper towel or even newspaper and tightly roll up a piece. Place the end of the paper in the drainage hole that is the lowest. The paper will absorb a lot of the moisture. Keep repeating the process until the paper isn't soaked.
A friend does this for her show plants. She calls it diapers for plants.
