JD 14SE Tranny Won't Engage When Cold

I've had a John Deere 14 SE self propelled walk behind mower for many years. Great machine. Now that the weather has turned cooler, I notice that the self propelled drive won't engage, or engages sporadically during use. The mower has worked fine all summer in the warmer weather. I also noticed this happening last fall when putting the mower away for the fall. When I fired it up in the spring, everything worked great.

Could this be a fluid related issue? Maybe whatever fluid is in the tranny thickens in the cooler weather and prevents the tranny from engaging? Is there a place to add/change fluid? I checked the drive belt and pulley. Both are engaging properly when the dirve handle is squeezed.

I don't have a manual for this mower. Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated.
