Name That Plant!

Bean Vine

Hello,

I visited a new house today and the woman had this bean vine that totally took over the side of her shed, and they were loaded with seed pods. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture, but I did take a picture of the seed pod/seeds. Does anyone know what it is?

They are black beans with light brown streaks, if that helps. Thanks!

i dont know..

but i wonder if you really want to plant something that swallowed her shed ????

you might want to wait and hold your seeds.. to see how many billion sprout back around her shed.. lol ...

Runner beans will rot if too wet. I sow them indoors in April or outdoors in late May and water only sparingly. Do not presoak as they risk rotting. Don't winter sow. They need warmth. If you can get them started it may be possible to get a crop as they grow very fast in warm conditions. Mine started cropping about three weeks ago and it's been about 60f here. No way has the soil been 65 - 70! You could also consult the legumophiles on the Bean, pea and legume forum.

GG, How large do those vines grow for you? I grew morning glories last year and loved them but they were a little overwhelming. They would have covered the deck completely if I had let them.

Hyacinth Bean Vine & Malabar Spinach Vine

Speaking of Malabar spinach, I've grown both the red and green stem and although the red stemmed seems to be more readily available, (maybe because it is more colorful) I liked the green stem variety more. In my experience the leaves were bigger, tastier and it didn't seem to reseed so freely. Has anyone else had experience with both? Some people harvest a whole stem and pull the leaves off, but I usually cut only the leaves off and the stems would sprout more leaves. The leaves are big and shiny and easy to harvest and it doesn't seem like there would be a problem mistaking Hyacinth bean leaves for Malibar spinach leaves, but you might get better production if the Hyacinth vine did not over shadow the Malabar or vice versa. Whatever it is, I do not believe they are from an edible, garden bean variety or castor. Wisteria would be something to compare against though.

I thought of wisteria but wisteria pods are slightly furry. Do these pods look as if they might have once been furry? I certainly wouldn't eat an unidentified bean. Some are toxic.

As Fatamorgana says, they are not castor beans which are not true beans and don't grow in a pod.

if you took this pic in Jan, in a zone 6 we must assume it is dormant.
My guess is Wisteria, not all varieties have fuzzy (technical terms) seed pods. Mine are brown, on the dark side and glossy as the pic. The seeds are almost black in nature. could go out an collect hundreds of pods or wait............ and next fall pull hundreds of seedlings!
