How many cubic feet in a 25 gallon pot?

Placing my BB order for myself and a friend (20 Jewels and 30 more sweet crisps) and he is going to grow his blueberries in 25 gallon pots. Does anyone know how many cubic feet of pine bark will fill a standard 25 gallon nursery pot?

If you are talking Imperial gallons, six and a quarter gallons in a cubic foot. If you are talking US gallons, take 8 tenths of that. So, 25 divided by 6.25 is the cubic feet for Imperial. Take point eight of that for US gallons. So 4 cubic feet for Imperial measure, 3.2 for US measure.

Those are HUGE pots. Must be similar in size to a whiskey barrel (1/2). If you are ordering pots that big, shipping is just insane (I had looked last year and then decided on 15 gallon pots).

fitlaura777 - many dimensions can make up 25 cubic ft. Also not knowing how thick those cushions are make the calculation impossible. A storage unit of 2' x 3' x 4' would give you 24 cu.ft. but what size will yours be. There's bound to be empty space that the cushions don't take up too. See the dillema??

Jeri, do you really use *25* gallon pots? In the decomposing granite up here I'd have to get a Bobcat with a back hoe! Pattie, is your rose dead-dead? You may want to start over with a more mature bush, but I've resuscitated 4 now (one the dog stepped on). IF it's still green (green but a little puckered is ok) you can go about it two ways (and what have you got to lose, right?). If there are any side roots at all, cut the top off to what you think looks sustainable for the roots that are left, should be less than a foot. Put the base in a pot with *seed starter mix* - I've had much better luck with this than potting mix, since it's finer it stays wetter and therefore there is more water in contact with the rose, yet it's not water logged. I'd put the soil level a few inches above the first V on the trunk so it stays plenty moist and it can also go own root if it wants. Put a bag over it or better still in a plastic container like a Sterlite storage bin. Keep an eye on it to check for mold. If you do see mold, a spritz with some alcohol will kill the mold, leave the container open for it to evaporate. Btw, I've had success with this even without roots, just the trunk of the bush, so again, what's to lose? I've also had good luck lately rooting stems using the tomato refill Jiffy peat disks (they expand to about 4" high) or 3" peat pots with seed starter mix. Use rooting hormone if you like. Put them in a gallon ziplock and again keep an eye on them for mold as above. The disks are nice because they aren't messy, wet easily and you can fit 4 in a bag. I found both at Lowe's. Light and temp? I've had them in our mtn garage that has a window and stays around the low 50s when it's cold. Haven't tried this in the heat yet. Water. The friend that got me hooked on this mentioned that with hard/alkaline water, they don't root well. Since you can stand a spoon in our water, I played around with some spa pH sticks and vinegar to get to around pH 6.6-7.0 I wouldn't just add 'some' because it doesn't take much to buffer a gallon of water and once you do it you'll always know. Mix. I picked the Ferry Morse mix at Lowe's because it had perlite instead of vermiculite (clay) which I thought would bog. I can't say what has made the most difference as I never had any luck before, but I'm sure the finer seed mix is a big help keeping the stems moist enough. Good luck and good hunting! I'd just over estimate !! I am sure you can use the rest of the soil up. If you can get a compressed bale of Promix that would be great. We get donations like that with no problem from our local garden centers for our Elementary School garden you just have to ask the right person. They may have a damaged bag(s) that they would like to get rid of. Don't get the stuff with miracle gro in it as you will only grow algae !!!

With horse manure it is almost impossible to give them too much. Let the cow manure pre-compost, and it is almost impossible to give them too much. When we talk about too much food, we are usually talking about kitchen scraps. Too much food in the form of kitchen scraps will create a pretty yucky environment. The moisture in the food will cause the bin to go anaerobic, and the high nitrogen will throw off the bin's environment. Whatever you feed them, worms will consume about half their body weight each day. Under good conditions, they will eat their own body weight each day. Too much food is simply more than they can eat. Another factor that determines over feeding is the tendency of the food to heat up as it is breaking down. Both horse and cow manure can heat up quite a bit. If they have been aged to the point where they will no longer heat up, you won't have this problem. Any food you put in the bin should be totally consumed by the worms in about a week. Additional food can be added before that to give it a chance to break down before the worms attack it. You are feeding too much if it is not all consumed within a week. So our rule of thumb is to add about 1/2 pound of food for each pound of worms per day. You don't need to feed every day. You could feed 2 pounds of food for each pound of worms every fourth day. Then watch to see how fast the worms eat it and adjust the amount you feed accordingly. Aged horse manure is an ideal worm food. I would add about a pound of horse manure for each pound of worms and see how fast they eat it. You won't need bedding. Your only concern is for over heating. With cow manure, you will need some bedding. I would add about a pound of aged cow manure plus bedding for each pound of worms and see how fast they eat it. Feeding is as much an art as it is a science. In time you will figure it out. If you are feeding aged horse manure, or even small amounts of fresh manure, it is hard to make any big mistakes. You could fill your entire bin with aged horse manure, and your worms will be very happy. Weighing food isn't practical, and weighing your worms is nearly impossible, so add no more than an inch of aged manure over the top of the bin and see what happens. If the manure is still fresh, only cover half of the bin surface. That way, if the manure gets hot, the worms can escape to the other side of the bin. In a few days it will cool off, and the worms will be all over it. Really. Worms devouring horse manure is a sight to see. Your bin will be less than 8 inches deep, so this is what I would do. If the manure is well aged, fill the entire bin with horse manure, and feed enough to keep the depth between 6 and 8 inches. If you are feeding cow manure, you will need a bedding source as well. If there is any question as to whether the manure has aged enough, fill the bin with some form of bedding, and feed enough manure on the top to keep the depth between 6 and 8 inches, only feeding half of the bin surface at a time. If the manure is fresh, you could start with a mixture of manure and bedding and let the bin sit for a couple of weeks before adding worms. After a couple of weeks, turn the whole thing and make sure it does not heat up. If it does heat up, wait another week and try again. This is getting long. Time to post it. If I missed anything, someone else will fill in the holes.

Hmm.....the problem is the bags of pine fines are 2 cubic feet each and it will take far more than 1.5 bags to fill the pots. I must be missing something.

He already has the pots. They are pretty common here as some of the commercial Blueberry growers use them and when they switch to hilled rows thousands of the pots and half water barrels become available.

Plastic 30 or 55 gallon drums cut in half will do the same thing.
I get them free, but some people sale used ones for $8.00-$10.00. Then you will need to cut them in half.

I may be mistaken, but a cubic foot of water weighs 62.7 lbs, and a US gallon about 8 pounds, so there should be about 8 gallons of water to a cubic foot.

If you take Jocelyn's 6.25 Imperial gallons and divide by 0.8 you get 7.81 gallons to the cubic foot. So that works out to about 3.2 cubic feet to fill a 25 gallon pot. (Since a US gallon is smaller than an Imperial gallon it has to take more of them. Or am I confused?)

That is good you have them. I remember shipping for me was more then the cost of the pots. The nice thing about nursery pots is they last a long time (thick plastic/uv protected).

Couldn't u just buy a few bags and fill a pot up and go from there? I've got 3 young kids and my brain is scrambled like an egg...too many numbers :) Why we never moved to the metric system is beyond me.

Yep we will fill a pot and see...I was just curious last night and figured it would be a easy answer. I will report back lol.

There are 2.34 cu. ft in 25 gallons, can't say how much pine bark it will take though.

The precise part of the answer is immaterial because 25 gallons is just the nominal size of the pot, not the exact size (this is similar to common pipe sizes).

at the size of this project.. i would be looking for a dump truck load.. rather than bags ...

right now.. you are looking at about 2 bags per pot.. time 25 pots... or 50 bags .. yikes..

if they are 4 bucks a bag.. you might get a lot of media dumped in your driveway for 200 dollars ...

think outside the box you are already sitting in ... once you start thinking about the size of the project ...

Ken is right. The local place that sells rocks, woodchips, soil by the truckload is "dirt" cheap compared to going to a Menards and buying by bag. You can get a ton of rock for $20 or less. I know my brother had top soil delivered to his house and it wasn't bad (lot less then I expected)...

You would think bulk wouuld be the way to go but.........

There is 27 cubic feet in a yard.

a 2 cf bag of pine fines from walmart is $2.65 a bag so $35.75 a yard. A yard of pine fines from the only spot that sells it is $30. Walmart is 5 miles from my house..the nursery that sells the pine fines is 30 miles. In my case the bulk is more expensive. I don't grow my BB in pots, I grow in the ground. The pots were for a friend that wanted an easier way to grow the blueberries.
