Honda Self-Propelled mower problems

I have a Honda HRM215-CM, the other day the self propelled drive stopped and immediately smoke started coming from underneath, I released the drive lever and the smoking stopped and everything was working fine other than the self propel feature wasnÂt working. Now, I essentially have a push mower. IÂm wondering, is this a common problem? Is there an easy way to fix it? IÂm thinking there is some type of clutch in the transmission that could be slipping or just worn out. Can anyone give me some advice?

I believe this has a belt drive and that you probably need a new belt.

for a parts breakdown. You do have a belt as well as pulleys and a small transmission. Good luck

Not familiar with your unit at all, but it sounds like there is too much of a gap somewhere, whether it be the belt length or an air gap on a friction device.

Set mower on a box under the front, or rear.Where the wheel won't stay in adjustment. Try to turn the wheel around until the handle clears the notches on the adjuster. Then bend the handle in toward the mower deck. it is springy but can be bent in some. Then try the setting of the handle in the notches. It should be better.

Sounds like belt tension to me. You'll have to turn it up and look underneath to see if the belt gets tight when the drive is engaged (engine OFF of course and spark plug grounded). Anytime you tilt a mower up on one side, make sure the carburetor is on the high side. The belt could be worn or stretched and/or something could be preventing it from getting tight enough, like bent parts or foreign material in the way.

The drive wheels and axle ends should be cleaned and lubricated regularly. If they haven't, the ratchets could simply be stuck because of old grease and dirt. You can look it up on the Honda site and see the drawing for the rear wheel drive sector which shows how the ratchet in the pinion gear is held in place with e-clips. Typically on my Toros which use a similar arrangement I clean them 'in-situ' (without disassembly) with solvent, brake cleaner spray, etc., then lube with spray grease. Otherwise, the procedure for belt adjustment is to turn the adjuster with the engine running but without touching the drive bail/lever until the wheels begin to turn, then back off a half turn or so. Its hard to say for sure, but I think you have a combination of maintenance needs including drive wheels and belt/adjustment.

There's nothing there to smoke except the belt. The belt would not get hot enough to smoke unless the transmission pulley was frozen, most likely from worn out/broken gears inside.

Where do you live I have a Honda Self propelled mower with a blown engine.

I have a HRB216TDA model self propelled Honda lawn mover. The 2nd and the 3 rd gear is not engaging. I took that to a dealer and he adjusted the nuts on the throttle cable. Came home tried to move the lawn it worked for 10 foot after that it is not self propelled. Again I took that to the same dealer and he adjusted the throttle nuts like last time and gave back. The same problem It self propelled now possibly 15 foot. The mechanic was explaning to me how to use the lawn mover (I have moved the lawn for 6 years). I already spent $ 100 (2X$50). ANy tips to fix the problem would be great. Thanks in advance.
