toro model# 22035 2- stoke

i just picked up a 1991 toro model 22035. im rebuilding the carb and cant find the settings for the needles. i thought i read somewhere there is no settings on these. if this is true do i just screw them all the way in? does anyone know if this is right or wrong? the carb is na mikuni BV-15. i cant find any info on it on there web site. thanks

No. 2 turns out is always a good starting place for needle valves. When screwing in to the stop, go very gently, then count your turns out. If the valves were not needed, I'm sure they wouldn't be there. Usually, one is the idle and the other is the hi-speed mixture control. 2 turns might be rich, but will be easier to start. You can refine the settings after it warms up.

back: Follow Sax's advice once your engine has reached operating temp . Start at 1-1/2 turns out on both jets and fine tune from there .

I assume you are talking about the Suzuki 47P engine used on both Commercial Proline and Consumer Toro mowers from the early 1980's to about 2003. Great engine with few weaknesses but parts have always been expensive and are getting harder to source. Given your symptoms, I would follow the earlier advice, and also consider the coil and the crankshaft seals. Coil can be a weak area, and they are expensive. Earliest ones (to 1986) used breaker points and 81-1990 coil; later with electronic ignition used 81-2820 ($140.00 to $160.00 online). If crankshaft seals are leaking because of wear, this can cause hard starting and low power as crankcase pumping is affected. Parts are fairly cheap ($6.00 for 81-0720 Upper and $8.00 for 81-0740 Lower), but a major amount of labor to split the cases and replace the seals. When the mower dies and won't start, try burping it with some ether starting fluid. If it lights up and then dies again, you have a fuel related problem. If it won't run even on starting fluid, probably not carburetor or fuel supply, but ignition, compression, or elsewhere. Before you get too deep, is this a Commercial mower, or is it a Consumer? Also look at overall condition. A lot of Commercial Prolines were rode hard and put away wet. Although the owner and crew boss were usually pretty careful, the laborers just ran them until they quit. By now, even the latest Prolines are near 10 years old and have had a lot of hard use. Consumer mowers had fewer hours, but were often neglected. You said yours is 25 years old!!! A Commercial in very good condition is worth $500 or more. At the same time a Consumer machine might only be worth $200 or so. You need to make a hard eyed judgement whether restoring the machine makes economic and operational sense. Call me silly, but I can't see sinking $200 in parts, plus several hours professional labor in a machine that is only worth $200 or $225 at the end of the day.

Do not eliminate the gov unless you wanna eliminate the engine altogether. Instead of manually removing carbon like that you need to start using seafoam in the gas/oil mix at 2oz per gallon for maintenance....no more taking engines apart.

I bought my Model 6262 from a neighbor in 1985, when my W.T. Grants mower(a 1960's hand-me-down from another old neighbor) gave up the ghost. I have used and abused that machine for 27 years, mowing lawns and picking up lots of leaves. With the exception of one muffler, three plugs, two bags and a few blades, that machine hasn't ever let me down. Until this past fall. Suddenly she refused to start. I installed a fresh plug and still no dice. I parked it in the garage until today, when I finally gave it a second look. Began by pulling the fuel line from the tank petcock and voila! No flow! Probed the petcock with a small nail and the obstruction(gunk) popped out along with renewed fuel flow. Cleaned the machine up a bit while it was up on the bench and brought it outside for a test drive. 4 pulls and that sucker fired right up in a glorious cloud of blue smoke. To think, I was beginning to consider a new machine. Think I'll treat her to a shot of grease to the wheels and a new blade. Not necessarily an addiction. Just an apreciation for a machine that can give that much uninterupted service, without requiring much more from me than fuel/oil.

I also have the 3650 and it does one heck of a job....love it. I've used it 3 times already this winter. Like others said it cleans right down to the concrete...that was why I chose it over the 2 stage. I bought mine from Speedway Sales (great price no tax-free ship). I was on there site yesterday and the 3650 was sold out....that tells me something. I also noticed Toro has a new model somewhat like the Commander but has same 6 1/2 Duraforce as the 3650 but don't know much about it. I think the 3650 is made to handle up to about 12" of snow but I have gone threw 18" drifts taking a couple bites. Some complain about the 2 cycle oil smell...but this season I switched to synthetic 2cycle oil and don't get the smell and it seems to run better. I now use synthetic 2 cycle in my string trimmer , leaf blower and now the 3650 also.

i have another question about de-carbonizing the piston. can i remove the head and and remove the carbon build up on the piston without removing the piston and then clean it with water? i dont want to change the rings out. just wanted to know if that would hurt the engine. thanks

I have some bad news for you.

Your 22035 is fitted with a Suzuki 2 stroke (which is good) and should have electronic ignition.

However, the Mikuni BV-15 has a fixed Main Jet, either a #80 or a #76.3. Only idle mixture can be adjusted. 1 1/2 turns is good initial setting for idle jet.

Also, head is not removable on the Suzuki. You must full disassemble the engine to get access to crown of piston and combustion chamber. All you can do with engine together is clean the exhaust ports and the muffler. Suggest you use wooden stick for that job and nothing metallic, as piston and cylinder are easily scratched.

Your best bet would be to purchase the Toro/Suzuki Service Manual 492-0260. Google that number; should be $6 to $8 for a paper copy. I can also sell you a PDF copy.

Back : As GG has indicated BV-15 Mikuni Slide carbs are offered with Adjustable Main and Secondary Idle Circuit Jets also with Fix Main Jet with Variable Orifice Sized Replacement Jets . As far as the decarbonizing there are two theories of practical solution. You could try the fine water spray application during high idle to break down the crown carbon deposits or go with a chemical concentrated fuel injector cleaner & top end lubricant that either Lucas or Duralube offers , which will gradually reduce your current carbon fouling of the head and rings or in a 4-stroke application reduce carbon on Valve Train Components also . As for scratching or etching the Piston Crown gg is correct in that small scratches can develop into cracks and have potential for premature piston failure.

A good way to clean carbon deposits long term is to start using Seafoam in your gas/oil mixture. It will slowly break it down while you are using it and actually bring your compression up by removing carbon deposits in the piston ring grooves freeing them for higher comp.

I would advise you leave the engine alone if its running good. Parts are difficult to find and expensive as hell. Use the seafoam and not water!
