Galvanized Tub Indoor Decor

I've been decorating this week! I love this project because it is an "sort-of" indoor gardening idea. Use a galvanized tub, drill hole in bottom side for lights; cut plexi-glass sheet to fit tub about an inch down from the top. cover plexi-glass with blue cellophane. Add fake snow! Wa-la!!! An ice-skating rink!

As you can see this is a new galvanized tub...I leave my old ones out all winter with the dirt left in them...so this is a shiny skating pond! It's one of my favorite decorations I made 2 Christmas' ago. Saw the idea in a speciality shop! What fun! Jeanne S.

Oh my gosh, that is so cute. What a great idea. Ever since I was little every Christmas I have either made or thought about making a little ice skating rink scene with a mirror and cotton or whatever I had on hand that year. This is a whole new twist on that idea! I Love it!!! And I already have 2 frosted snowmen just like that, they are some of my favorite little guys to bring out for Christmas. Pretty deer, too. I bet they just glow with the light comming from the bottom like that.

Oh, I bet that's so pretty with the blue lights. I've never seen anything like it before,how cute! :) That would work inside or outside,too :)

Good to know, jessicaml, thanks! The tub doesn't seem to have any paint left on the outside, but also isn't rusty. Rustoleum says not to use the red rusty metal primer on non-rusty metal. Is there another red oxide primer I should use? I'm going to have to do this all with brushes, as the bathtub is going to be in my very tiny and very recently decorated nursery (no, the baby won't be there - he's out of town), so spraying is not very practical.

Hey guys! It is far from over but I had to post some photos of my Bathtub garden. I only bought a few succulents since I had to move to a different country in 3yrs again but for some empty spots, I already have in mind to put some Lithops(in the process of germinating from seeds) Half of the tub is completely empty for now but I know what I'm going to do it with..It will take about a couple weeks to a month. beesneedsWe have a tankless water heater that sits about 12 feet (on the outside of the house) from where the tub is installed. The tankless provides unlimited hot water at call. They are also VERY eco-friendly and conserve energy (not always heating and re-heating like the tank-style water heaters). Lowering both our gas bill and water bill! I obviously won't be taking baths every night ~ or even every week... And there would never be a desire to fill the tub all the way to capacity whenever it is in use. I just love how big it is for a fun bath playtime (or indoor "pool" time in the hot California summers) for my 3 small children. They can splash around and not make a total disaster on the bathroom floor. To answer your second question, I wouldn't think you'd want to leave water standing inside copper for days upon end... mostly because stagnant water breeds bacteria and I've been instructed to not put any cleaning chemicals or even products like Epsom Salt in the tub since it can scratch the finish. If you anticipate getting something like this tub for an outdoor pool, I'd contact a professional to discuss if its a good idea for long-term standing water. :)

Moral of the story here is everyone has different wants. Back in the 2000's all I would see are jetted drop-in tubs, so I perceived those to be "the best that rich people bought" lol. Gotta take a step back and figure out your personal wants and how you'll realistically use I agree for mobility, drop-in is much easier to use Heat retention, I'm still voting for cast iron. I've owned insulated fiberglass with jets, used just about everything in between, then own a freestanding cast iron now. Realistically, you draw a bath then sit in it for maybe half an hour. I've seen fiberglass/acrylic units with heat pads in them (...why?) to combat this, or you do what everyone has done for hundreds of years and turn the hot valve on low. My last fiberglass tub, the tub would feel a hair colder than the water as it cooled down at the end. My current iron tub doesn't do that, seems to maintain temp longer, but again metal=conduction. Could think resale, or maybe you'll barely ever use it so it's more for looks. Can't go wrong if you do the right thing for you

Awww, that's so cute! You did a great job! Whenever I see an idea somewhere, I always have to hurry up and draw it, otherwise I can't remember what it looked like! That is a decoration that looks really great as is, but when you turn on the lights, it must look incredible!! I love it!!

Wow, I'm impressed with this idea, that's really nice looking. You could even cover the tub with something like warm and natural batting or fiberfill so it looks like a hill of snow.

Here's a pic I just took without a flash which shows how the skating rink looks in the evening. I want to tell you that the lady's shop where I got this idea told me how to make one. She has a wonderful shop and sold the glass figurines (plus other wonderful things)! I bought one from her and the others in the last couple years from various places...the deer is actually plastic from Menards at the end of the season. Glad you enjoyed! Have fun with this project! Oh my gosh, I was right, it is just enchanting with the lights turned on!! Do you think this idea would work for outside too, or would the snowmen be too fragile in cold temps? I really love this idea, and I think it would look fantastic outside by the back door!

Countrygrl - I don't know if this would work outside...since you live in an area like me, I think the
wind, rain and snow might make havoc of it. I'm thinking the plexiglass sits down inside and that snow/rain might freeze around it and break it??? And the glass figurines would be breakable but maybe not the plastic ones.
