Blades for a Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor

We own a Sears Craftsman 24.0 HP 48" cut lawn tractor. Time to check and sharpen the blades!! These blades appear to be the bagging or discharge type blades -- raised up on one side. This tractor has three blades -- obviously -- the one outside blade -- closest to the discharge chute is badly won down -- wonder about the reason for this. The second thing is when you lay the blades one on top of another the mandrel holes do not line up -- the two outside blades match -- but the center blade mandrel holes are off compared to the other two. Am I explaining myself properly -- it's like of you buy three new blades one would be different -- phoned Craftsman -- they have no idea -- anyone able to help ?? Would I just go ahead and buy three new matching blades. Also would cutting around gardens that have small rocks beds in them eventually wear the one blade down ??

Sears 48"s typically have all 3 blades matching- all that I've seen anyways. Are you saying that the center blade doesn't have the star? The outside blade will do more work as it is handling the cuttings and debris from the other 2 blades- so more wear isn't abnormal. The sand/ dirt the blades pick-up seems to wear the sails down more quickly- so people w/ sandy soil get it bad and soon.Of course, rocks don't actually help. When servicing your deck, I would suggest removing it so it can be cleaned and inspected properly as well. Once you've done it once or twice, you will find it easy. Roll off the belt, lower the deck, remove the front bracket and the other few hanger pins and your done. Just don't curse me the first time you reinstall it....

You will need to check for 12V and ground at the harness for starters. AN increased gap will not always let a clutch engage, but would it pop the fuse getting hot enough? Never say never. Is it possible a wire backed up in the connector behind the pto switch?

You might provide the Sears 917.xxxxxx number so one knows WHICH tractor you have. You didn't even mention if it has an electric clutch or manual clutch!

There was a time when Sear had a reputation for good products and customer service. Unfortunately that time is long past. I purchased 2 sets of T handle Craftsman allen wrenches last November on "Black Friday." When I got home I found that the metric set was the ball end type. Oh well, not worth a 75 mile round trip to return them. So a few weeks ago I finally had need to use one of the metric wrenches. The ball end did not engage the set screw sufficiently, rounded off and also messed up the screw. The next time I happened to travel to Goldsboro, NC I took the set with me and stopped at Sears. I wanted to exchange the ball end set for the standard set (which lists for $5 less). The ball end set was on sale and as I did not have a receipt (who keeps a receipt for Craftsman Guaranteed Forever tools???) they proposed to charge me $1 and change to exchange the more expensive set of the cheaper set! Needless to say I made them give me a new ball end set. I will keep them in the car and next time I am near Sears I will see if the items are at regular price. Just wait till K-Mart-Sears decides to declare Chapter 11 again and nullify the Craftsman guarantee. What a class action law suit that will make :-) Ken

I do not think the 486.244121 blade will fit the tractor you reference. I think you will find differences in the front end of the tractor that prevent using it. I think you will need the 486.24414 blade, which is the latest model. If you go to the sears, parts website http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action and put in the blade model number for a parts search when the parts screen comes up you will see an option to the right of the page to download manuals. You will need to register with an email address and password to download. Download a manual for each blade and you judge if it will fit. I am not positive if it will or will not fit. Good luck

The thing is I can find the blades anywhere to order -- I just don't understand why the center blade has a star that is off set by one notch -- I know this makes no sense -- but I took them off -- cleaned the deck -- did some repairs to the guide wheels -- sharpened the blades a bit -- replaced everything -- all seems good -- but I ordered three blades -- hope all is well -- thanks for your input

Did you check to see if there were any part numbers stamped into the blades?

Are you saying that the star in all three blades is basically the same, however the one blade star is positioned slightly different? That in itself wouldn't be a biggie as these blades aren't timed. Or that the star is a 6 point rather than a 5?

Actually didn't see any numbers on the blades -- had to put them back on until I can get the new ones -- and yes the stars are the same -- just placed slightly different -- seemed strange.
AND I just checked out that Sears site -- which I never found on any search and WOW there are all the parts -- THANKS -- sure hope I get the right parts from the place I ordered. Thanks again -- this had been a great help.
