broken bowling ball

I told Kirk I would post my broken bowling ball. Need to take off the rest of plastic? and then cover the inside. I thought it looked like fiberglass but DH said it looks like it is cement, lol.

Girl...that looks like a TBM...to be mosaiced. Someone ages ago said they had one with concrete in the middle. I think they are all made different. You could paint a turkey on it! LOL!

I was going to give you the instructions I've been collecting, but see you got a teriific link that tells you nearly everything. Did it say to get 6 and a half bags of half marbles to do a regular sized bowling ball? Also I thought this person I'm quoting below had good information on preparation: "I paint mine with Fusion paint for plastics, or I use a plastic primer first and then a spray paint of my choice. I let the ball cure for 2 weeks per the can instructions, then I spray 3-4 layers of an outdoor clear poly on it and let that cure for another day or two, then it can go outside. I also spray it with clear poly every spring and bring them inside for the winter as they could crack depending on what the ball was made of. Make sure you get the waxy coating off the ball first by washing it with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution or rubbing alcohol." Hope some of this helps! We're anxious to see what you do! I want to do my first one too!

Hi No Clue, I would agree with James... Water the Jm since you have it in the gritty mix... It is so fast draining that within several days it is bone dry..like James said it is on its way to root faster than a normal "fresh cutting" sice it had established roots and it is ready to produce more... As far as the newly planted barerooted cutting potted up into the gritty mix. I water when they are dry..it depends on your heat , humidity, etc... but i have to water my newly planted trees around every three days. You are not going to cause any major problems by watering these rooted trees in the gritty mix. You can use a wooden skewer to check for moisture or start to get the feel of the container when it is dry. I don't hesitate to water my trees in the summer when i think they are ready for some water... People think of rot it they are watered to much, but the real problem is when they sit in water. They don't like wet feet, so if you use a fast draining mix, you have started them on the right track. Plants/trees need water. So let them dry out just a bit, then water. Bill always comes to my mind when he would say... Don't "mother Hen' your trees. Give them some space to grow and dont fuss about with them to much... LOL He is right. You repotted the new trees.. Wonderful JOB!! The one with the roots missing, that really isnt to much of a problem...that actually happened to one of mine from Fuzzy. I emailed him and he said to watch it and if i had problems email him back. It is doing fine and growing well. i think it had one root on it when it arrived... Relax... This is fun ... :) ALL will be fine.. Remember when you think they need water wait a day or two, except for the new planted (rooted ) trees. I give them extra attention. I like to keep them from direct sunlight as i had mentioned.. Just to give them some break from all of the stress... It will be fine... Take care, Laura

Actually, working with it is easy enough, I was glueing it with Mac Glue and on the BB I found that it just slides a bit, I guess I didn't really like it because I was disappointed in the results. I've seen so many beautiful ones on this and other sites, that because it is easy to apply I thought it would look better. I find the ones on the internet seems so much brighter and vibrant than mine. I had painted my BB, in yellow, orange and red, (degrading), and I just find it "blah" boring is the word I guess. Not ugly just boring. I have one GOG to finish (the one I broke), and then I have 3 projects to grout so I am hoping it will help with the looks!

Its actually the adhesive that can eat the mirror backing off and make it spotty. I personally like that effect-it looks antique. Solutions to that are to either seal the mirror with miror sealant before gluing or use proper adhesive. (Loctite silicone sealant and adhesive for example.) The e 6000-I used that once upon a time before I met silicone and it held up very well thru all kinds of weather so it will probably be fine. Next time-get silicone, its cheaper than e 6000 anyway. Grouting--I like to mix my grout dry-nice and thick, not runny. Dryer grout is easier to apply and clean. Smoosh it in all the spaces, wait a few minutes-and I mean a few, especially if its hot, and with a slightly damp spong or crumpled newspaper remove the extra. wait till it sets up a bit and clean it better. (so you dont remove it from the spaces). Its not hard and everyone kind of develops their own way to do it. Good luck!

That's interesting! That really must be an old ball! So the shell of it was rubber or plastic??? I had posted to Kirk about my experiences with them. One I tried drilling a hole (to make a bubbler fountain). Well, my drill is wimpy and got stuck about halfway through. FIL drilled it with his all the way thorugh and even another BB too! The one I partially did came out with polyethelene and what looked like wood shavings. BUT, one ball that I had in my garden cracked. My son and I did it in all the way in with a chisel and a hammer. It's innards were a barbell shaped foam conrete material. Some of the older black balls were made of rubber on the outside I know for sure. WEll, yours, even though injured, looks like it still has life in it. I'm thinking a rooster/chicken head with feathers coming out the holes. Oh, the Martian with the helmut from Bugs Bunny, a quails head with feathers on top....or a mosaic-ed BB. Have fun with it.

Wow :) I glued flat marbles to a cracked one a couple years ago,it's still holding up,but I wonder if this is what's going to happen to it one day. If it does, I hope it comes out nice and neat like yours! I'd mosaic it, but then I've been going crazy with the mosaics lately :) The last bowling ball I did was with pennies,and I used vinegar and salt to start a nice patina( I posted pics of it then) and it's still got a good patina on it :)

that is so cool. I had one that my son and his friends wanted to use as target practice and it was cork inside. It was cool but there was nothing left of it. I wonder how hard it would be to get the rest of the outside off yours? That would be cool just to leave it as a cement bb or whatever that is inside(-:
