Honda HRA214 Noise

I have had an HRA214 for years. I only use it occasionally to go between trees, etc. It starts right up, but makes a racket when the blade is NOT engaged. Quiets right down when it is engaged. Bought another HRA214 today, and it has no blade holder or blade on it. It does the same thing... makes a racket until you engage the blade (the one it doesn't have!). Any ideas what is causing this? Is this a common problem with these mowers?

Remove the centre bolt and the blade disc. Check the bearing, it might be rough. If so, replace it, I have seen one that completely failed and the blade and plate separated from the mower. Not a good thing. If I remember correctly it is a 6204 which is readily available from a bearing supply house. Don't buy it from Honda-$$$$.
The brake disc may also be warped so the brake drags when the clutch is engaged. Check for blue spots which are signs of overheating.

You didn't by any chance remove the blade did you? If it is installed upside down the dimple will press against the bearing causing it to bind. The clutch could also be plugged with grass, that was the problem with mine when I got it. The customer didn't want to spend any money on it. If you take it apart be careful when removing the center bolt, there is a heavy spring behind the plate, and make sure the lower bearing is in good condition. It is all that holds the assembly together. A replacement can be purchased at a bearing supply for a third of Honda's price.
